COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The White Team defeated the Red Team 12-10 in Maryland football's Red-White Spring Game, which was played on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
The game concludes the spring portion of Maryland's schedule, which featured 14 practices prior to Saturday's game.
"Today is the culmination of the 2021 spring season, which really starts our preparation for the upcoming 2021 season," said head coach
Michael Locksley. "I liked to see that the game today was competitive to the end. There's a lot of things we can work on but was happy the way this spring went for this season us and I'm excited to get away for a week or two, finish up the semester strong and get back in preparation for our 2021 season."Â
Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 353 yards, completing 35-of-47 passes to lead the White offense. Tagovailoa spread the ball around among the offense with
Dontay Demus Jr. catching eight passes for 98 yards,
Tayon Fleet-Davis recording eight receptions for 55 yards,
Chigoziem Okonkwo hauling in six catches for 81 yards and
Rakim Jarrett catching six passes for 45 yards.
Joseph Petrino scored all of the White Team's points, making four field goals, three in the first half and one in the second half. The senior kicker was true from 24 yards, 30 yards, 23 yards and 36 yards.Â
The Stefon Diggs MVP Award went to
Jordan Mosley who starred on the Red Team's defense, recording eight tackles, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.Â
Lawtez Rogers also shined on the defensive end, totaling three sacks for 23 yards and four tackles, earning the Kris Jenkins Most Valuable Lineman Award. The Red Team as a whole posted eight tackles for loss with
Ami Finau,
Tyler Baylor,
Nick Cross,
Ruben Hyppolite II and
Deonte Banks all getting in on the action.
After the White Team led 9-0 at half time, the Red Team took a 10-9 lead after three quarters behind an
Anthony Pecorella 22-yard field goal and the day's only touchdown, a trick-play 41-yard pass from running back
Challen Faamatau to
Nick DeGennaro. The White squad would use a 12-play, 51 yard drive and Petrino 36-yarder to go back in front early in the fourth quarter and held on for the win.
Isaiah Jacobs rushed for 70 yards on seven carries for the red team while Faamatau had 46 yards rushing on 10 carries.Â
