Strong First Half Pushes #13 Maryland Past Michigan in B1G Quarterfinals

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A 12 goal first half, which featured five goals from Hannah Leubecker and three goals from Libby May pushed the No. 13 Maryland women's lacrosse team past Michigan, 16-13, in the Big Ten Quarterfinals on Thursday night.

"It was a good win for us tonight. When you get to this time of the year you are excited to play and advance," said head coach Cathy Reese. "We started the game off really strong tonight and were doing exactly what we were asking and what our game plan was. We limited our turnovers, executed our offense and controlled the possession. The first half of lacrosse tonight was the best we've played all season. Great game for us, looking forward to playing tomorrow night."

The Terps had one of their best offensive halves of the season, scoring 12 goals on 21 shots with a combined eight from Leubecker and May. Maryland led 12-3 at the break and scored eight straight goals after the game was tied at two to take a 10-2 lead, holding Michigan scoreless for 16 minutes. Brindi Griffin, Catie May, Grace Griffin and Hannah Warther also scored in the first half to lead the potent offensive attack.

Lizzie Colson became only the third Terp ever to record 300 draw controls, securing her 300th early in the first half as she and Shaylan Ahearn led Maryland with four draws in the contest.

Leubecker finished the game with six goals, her sixth game this season with at least five goals. May tallied three, Brindi Griffin had a season-high three assists to go with a goal and Grace Griffin recorded two goals and an assist.

Emily Sterling picked up a career-best four groundballs to go with seven saves in a strong performance in which the Maryland defense held Michigan to only three goals in the first half.

The Terps will play the winner of No. 3 Johns Hopkins and No. 6 Penn State tomorrow night in the Semifinals at 8:00 p.m. on the Big Ten Network
