Terps Secure Fifth Straight Series Win, Beat Purdue 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland baseball team earned its fifth consecutive series win, taking the second game of a three-game set against Purdue, 6-1, on Saturday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Freshman right-hander Jason Savacool earned his league-high seventh win on the mound with six innings of one-run ball, while Maryland got homers from Chris Alleyne, Benjamin Cowles, and Bobby Zmarzlak.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland has now won every series it has played in during the second half of the season, dating back to the Terps' three-game sweep of Ohio State in College Park. The Terps have won 13 of their last 15 games, including nine consecutive wins at home. Maryland's home winning streak is the longest since winning 10 straight at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium to begin the 2017 campaign - the last season Maryland advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
  • Freshman right-hander Jason Savacool built upon his stellar rookie campaign, tossing six innings of one-run ball and earning his seventh win of the season. Savacool's seven wins is the most in the conference and most by a freshman pitcher at Maryland since Tyler Blohm - the 2017 Big Ten Freshman of the Year - won eight in his first year as a Terp.
  • Sophomore southpaw Ryan Ramsey tossed three scoreless innings of relief, earning his second save of the season, and improving his team-best earned run average to a paltry 2.10 mark.
  • Senior center fielder Chris Alleyne improved upon his team-high 13-game hitting streak with two hits on the afternoon, including his seventh home run of the year.
  • Junior shortstop Benjamin Cowles continued to blossom offensively in his third year at Maryland, belting his 16th homer of the year and tallying a pair of base knocks on the day. Cowles' league-leading 16th home run of the year is the most by a Terrapin since Brian Jarosinski also homered 16 times in 2004, and is tied for the sixth-best single-season mark in program history. Cowles has hit at least one home run in every weekend series this season - 11 consecutive weekends.
  • Sophomore Bobby Zmarzlak also continued his hot streak at the plate, recording three base hits on the afternoon for the second consecutive day, including his fifth home run of the season. Zmarzlak is 11-for-17 in his last four games.
  • Purdue got on the board first, getting their lone run across in the first inning with a two-out RBI single.
  • The Terps produced a pair of runs in the second, as Troy Schreffler Jr.'s sacrifice bunt was misplayed by the defense, allowing the tying run to score. Tucker Flint's sacrifice bunt of his own two batters later brought home Maryland's second run.
  • Maryland wouldn't score again until the fifth, as Alleyne and Cowles' solo homers extended the Terrapin lead to three runs. Zmarzlak's solo homer in the next inning made it a 5-1 ballgame.
  • After getting past the Boilermaker starter, Maryland produced another run in the seventh as Flint doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a wild pitch.
  • Despite allowing a pair of base hits, Ramsey faced the minimum after inducing a pair of double plays in his three innings of work.
Up Next
  • Maryland will face off against Purdue one more time in College Park, meeting at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
