Bernhardt's Six Goals Lead #1 Terps Past Vermont, 17-11

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 1-ranked and undefeated Maryland topped No. 15 Vermont in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Sunday afternoon, 17-11. The third-seeded Terps (13-0) advance to face No. 6 seed Notre Dame next weekend in South Bend on Sunday, May 23. Time and TV information will be announced when it is available.

Tewaaraton Award favorite Jared Bernhardt led the Terps with six goals and one assist for seven points. The six goals are the second-most by a Terp in an NCAA Tournament game in history. 

The 17 goals were the most Maryland has a scored in an NCAA Tournament game since beating Albany 18-9 in the 2017 Quarterfinals. 

PERFECTION CONTINUES
  • At 13-0, Maryland is off to its best start in school history surpassing the previous best of starting 12-0 in the 1987 season. That season ended at 12-1 with a loss to Johns Hopkins in the NCAA Semifinals.
  • The last time Maryland had an undefeated season was in 1973, when the NCAA Champion Terps went 10-0. 
  • Maryland also went undefeated in 1956 (10-0), 1955 (11-0), 1940 (10-0), 1937 (7-0) and 1936 (7-0).

NCAA SUCCESS
  • Maryland, which is playing in its 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament, the longest active streak in the nation, now has an all-time record of 64-39 (.621). 
  • The Terps have now advanced to seven consecutive Quarterfinal rounds and are 16-5 overall since the 2014 postseason, winning the NCAA Championship in 2017. 
  • Maryland is playing in its 43rd overall NCAA Tournament, second-most of any program in history. 

BERNHARDT CONTINUES TO RE-WRITE THE RECORD BOOK
  • Bernhardt continued to add to his Maryland record totals in the victory.
  • With his six goals, he added to his career goals record with 190 and his single-season goals record of 59. 
  • With his seven points, he added to his career points record with 273.
  • His single-season points total of 82 now stands tied for third in Maryland history as he passed Bob Boneillo (1979) and Logan Wisnauskas (2019), each who had 79 in a season. He is tied with Connor Kelly with 82 in 2018. The all-time single-season record for points in a season is 93 by Ray Altman in 1963.
  • Bernhardt also holds the program record for goals per game with 4.54 per game.
  • His points per game mark of 6.61 is now first all-time for a single-season (since 1971) ahead of  Boneillo's 6.58 in 1979.

WELL-ROUNDED GOALS SCORERS
BREAKING DOWN THE SCORING 
  • After the teams traded the first four goals of the game over 11 minutes, Maryland ripped off five goals in a row to take control of the game. Bernhardt had two in the run while Coffman, Long and Maltz also scored in the spurt to put Maryland up 7-2 and they never looked back.
  • The Terps led 8-4 at halftime thanks to Bernhardt's four first-half tallies.
  • After Vermont opened the second-half scoring, the Terps scored the final three goals of the third quarter, from Bernhardt, Fairman and Wisnauskas to lead 11-5 after three quarters. 
  • Both teams scored six goals in the fourth quarter, with Long tallying two of his that quarter. 

SHOCKEY ROCKS AT THE X
  • Maryland's face-off man Jeremy Shockey won 19-of-28 in the game and scooped up a game-high 10 groundballs. 
  • He did most of his work against Tommy Burke of Vermont, who came into the game winning 72 percent of his draws.
  • Overall, Maryland won 20-of-32 in the game for 63 percent.
