Nine Terps Named USILA All-Americans

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Nine members of the Maryland Lacrosse team were named USILA All-Americans Thursday in a release made by the organization. The nine honorees pushes Maryland's all-time total for USILA All-Americans to 502.
The nine selections are the most for a Maryland team in a single season since UMD produced nine during its 2017 National Championship campaign. John Tillman has coached 67 All-Americans since taking the reins in College Park, the most of any coach since 2011.
Jared Bernhardt headlined Maryland's selections, named the program's fifth-ever Lt. Raymond J. Enners Outstanding Player of the Year honoree and a First Team All-American. Nick Grill, Brett Makar and Kyle Long were named to the Second Team, Logan Wisnauskas, and Roman Puglise garnered Third Team honors, while Logan McNaney, Anthony DeMaio and Bubba Fairman earned an Honorable Mention.
Bernhardt, the current frontrunner for the Tewaaraton Award, has become just the eighth four-time USILA All-American in program history after a record-breaking season in College Park.
The 2021 Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year currently leads the nation in scoring, averaging 6.21 points per game (87 total) and 4.57 goals per game (64 total) on the season. The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year has set new records at Maryland in career points (278), career goals (195) and single season goals (64) this season.
Bernhardt set new career-highs in Maryland's Big Ten semifinal win over Michigan, tallying a career-best 10 points and eight goals in the 16-8 victory. Bernhardt was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week five times this season – the most ever by a player in a single season in conference history.
Grill has established himself as one of the nation's top defenders during the 2021 season, garnering national praise for his play for the top-ranked Terrapins. Grill became the first player in Big Ten history to win the conference's Defensive Player of the Week in three consecutive weeks this season after earning the distinction in the first three weeks of league play.
The Bridgewater, N.J. native is causing 1.29 turnovers per game, and has helped anchor Maryland's defensive unit which has allowed opponents just 10 goals per game in 2021. Grill was selected by the Whipsnakes Lacrosse Club in the 2021 PLL College Draft earlier this week. This is Grill's first career selection as a USILA All-American.
Makar also made his career debut on the USILA All-America Team after a breakout season in 2021 on the defensive end. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y. native has totaled 36 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers, while helping pace Maryland's defensive unit to just 10 goals allowed per game. Makar was named to the USILA Team of the Week (3/30) and B1G Defensive Player of the Week (4/6) this season.
Wisnauskas received his second career USILA All-America nod after putting together an impressive senior campaign in 2021. The attackman currently ranks 17th nationally in points per game (4.50), totaling 34 goals and 29 assists. His 29 assists ranks first on the team for the undefeated Terps.
The Sykesville, Md. native became the program's seventh player to reach 200 career points earlier this season in Maryland's 17-10 win over Penn State on April 3. The 2019 USILA All-American became Maryland's all-time leader in 8+ point games after a career-best 9-point (2G, 7A) outing against #20 Johns Hopkins on March 6.
Puglise earned his first career nod to the USILA All-America team after leading Maryland's short stick defensive midfield rotation in 2021. The Lorton, Va. native has tallied a goal and assist on the year, while scooping 22 ground balls and causing four turnovers. Puglise has been a major factor for UMD's defensive success, helping keep opponents to under 10 goals in six different games this year.
Long has put together a standout junior campaign for the Terps, totaling 40 points on 15 goals and 25 assists. The Springfield, Pa. native has posted at least one assist in every game but one this season, including four games of three or more assists. The junior has been a catalyst for Maryland's high-powered offense this season, helping pace the Terps to 16.07 goals per game (2nd nationally) and 9.64 assists per game (2nd nationally).
McNaney has been impressive during his first full season entrenched as Maryland's starting goalie, posting a 14-0 record in the cage with a 51.3% save percentage. His 9.78 goals against average ranks 14th in the country, and he has twice been named the Big Ten's Specialist of the Week in 2021. The Corning, N.Y. native has picked up 38 ground balls, caused seven turnovers and scored an unforgettable goal in Maryland's 18-8 win over Ohio State on April 18.
Fairman garnered USILA All-American plaudits for the second time in his career after an impressive senior season as a two-way midfielder. The Sandy, Utah native has posted 17 goals, five assists, 16 ground balls and five caused turnovers on the season, while consistently taking defensive shifts to help Maryland thwart opposing teams in transition this season.
DeMaio has been a mainstay in Maryland's first line midfield this season, scoring 20 goals while notching 16 assists on the year. DeMaio's biggest goal of 2021 came in the NCAA Quarterfinals, scoring in overtime to punch Maryland's ticket to its fifth Final Four in the past six NCAA Tournaments.
