Terrapins Start Strong in Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The Maryland field hockey squad got solid experience and showed its bright future in its exhibition match Friday night. The Terrapins beat a local club team, the DC Dragons, 6-1, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
"This was a very strong start with a new press leading to goals and penalty corners," head coach Missy Meharg said. "It was great to see new players on the field. I thought Anna Castaldo really improved her overall game in transition and she was player of the match. Taylor Mason and Bibi Donraadt joined Rayne Wright in the back and we've got some great depth."
Junior Maura Verleg opened the scoring with a goal off a penalty corner in first quarter. Junior Belle Bressler scored in the first 90 second of the second quarter to make it a two-goal lead for Maryland. Junior Margot Lawn scored just minutes later for a 3-0 advantage for the Terps.
Sophomore Anna Castaldo gave the Terps a 4-0 lead early in the third quarter. The Dragons got on the board with 5:00 left in the third period.
Graduate student Julianna Tornetta answered with back-to-back goals to start the fourth, making it a 6-1 lead for the Terps.
The Terrapins took 14 shots to seven for the Dragons. Goalkeepers Noelle Frost and Christina Calandra combined for four saves.
Maryland was without senior Riley Donnelly, junior Emma DeBerdine and freshman Hope Rose in Friday's exhibition. The trio is with the US Under-21 National Team competing in the Junior Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile.
The Terps will open the season by hosting UMass Lowell and Saint Joseph's at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex Friday, Aug. 27 and Sunday, Aug. 29. Admission is free.
