COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's soccer team will be back in action this week for a pair of home games, hosting Richmond on Thursday, August 26 and Navy on Sunday, August 29.
Both games will kick off at 4:30 p.m. at Ludwig Field and will be streamed on Big Ten Plus.
THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
WINNING WEEKEND
- Maryland won both of its opening weekend games to start the season 2-0, first beating Temple 3-0 on August 19 in its home opener before clinching a 2-0 road win over George Mason on August 22.
- Maryland is now 2-0 for the third time under head coach Ray Leone, and will have the chance to start 3-0 for the first time since the 2017 season when Maryland went undefeated in non-conference play (6-0-1).
- This is the first time since 2015 that Maryland has started the season with back-to-back shutouts.
Terps Finding the Back of the Net
- After finishing with just eight goals in last spring's Big Ten only 12-game schedule, Maryland wasted no time getting its offense going this fall with five goals in two games.
- The Terps scored two goals in just three games last spring, and scored the first goal of the game just once. On the contrary, UMD has scored the first goals in both games this season, including three against Temple.
- Maryland has had four different goal scorers thus far, with Alyssa Poarch (2), Kori Locksley, Emily McNesby and Loren Sefcik all finishing chances in the early goings of the season.
SERIES HISTORY
- Maryland is 1-2-0 all-time vs. Richmond, last facing the Spiders on August 31, 2017 at Ludwig Field where the Terps earned a 1-0 victory.
- The Terps are 11-1-2 all-time vs. the Naval Academy, resuming a series that began back in 1987. This will be the first meeting between the two schools since the 2018 season, when the two sides played to a 0-0 double overtime draw.
THREE TERPS MAKE DEBUTS
- Graduate transfers Liz Brucia and Kori Locksley, and freshman forward Toni Domingos made an immediate impact for Maryland as the trio made their debuts for the team this past weekend.
- Brucia paced the Terps to two shutouts, playing all 180 minutes in the goal this past week and stopping all four shots that came her way. Brucia is fast approaching her collegiate career-highs in minutes played (200:00) and saves (6).
- Locksley wasted no time breaking into the lineup for the Terps, starting both games at forward. She tallied an assist in Thursday's win over Temple, then followed it up with her first goal for the Terps Sunday less than three minutes into the game.
- Domingos was impressive in her collegiate debut, earning her first career start against Temple and playing 51 minutes against George Mason. The Bridgeport, CT ranks second on the team in shots (6).
2021 SCHEDULE
- After a spring season of Big Ten only competition, the Terps are back to a normal 18-game schedule with eight non-conference matchups on tap in August and September. UMD will be well-acquainted with Ludwig Field early on, with four of its first five games and eight of its first 11 games played at home.
- The Terps will fire up Big Ten play on Sunday, September 19 when they host Ohio State in College Park.
