Maryland Suffers First Defeat, Loses 3-1 to Navy

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite a goal in the opening minute and numerous second half chances, Maryland suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Navy by a score of 3-1. The two teams battled to a 1-1 tie going into the first intermission, with Mikayla Dayes early goal being answered by the Midshipmen in the 32nd minute. A Navy goal six minutes into the second half and another in the 62nd minute was enough to end the Terps three-game winning streak.

Quick Start
  • Just 44 seconds into the match, forward Mikayla Dayes took a pass from fellow forward Toni Domingos, made a move on the Midshipmen defender, and put a shot into the back of the net to give the Terps an early 1-0 lead.
  • It is the second fastest goal in Maryland history against Navy behind Alex Anthony's goal in 13 seconds in 2015.

Near Equalizers
  • Mere seconds after Navy took the lead, midfielder Loren Sefcik beat the Midshipmen goalie but saw her shot ring off the far post. Forward Kori Locksley followed it up but her shot sailed high above the net.
  • A few minutes later, Toni Domingos beat her defender on the near side but her shot hit the outside of the net. Domingos was later issued two yellow cards and ejected from the game in the waning minutes.

Up Next
  • The Terps will stay home and welcome George Washington to Ludwig Field on Sept. 2 at 7 pm.
  • Maryland is unbeaten all-time against the Colonials with a record of 1-0-3.
