COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland men's basketball All-American and No. 1 overall NBA Draft selection John Lucas is set to be inducted into the D.C. Sports Hall of Fame at Nationals Park Sunday, Sept. 5, before the Nationals play the Mets.
Lucas and his fellow 2020 classmates will be inducted with the 2021 class as last year's ceremony was canceled due to Covid-19.
Lucas will be inducted with fellow Class of 2020 members: Ken Beatrice, Herman Boone, Austin Carr, Gary Clark, Bob Dwyer and Jill Ellis. The Class of 2021 features Mike Barrowman, John Feinstein, Neal Henderson, Sally Jenkins, Fred Marberry, Dick Motta and Paul Rabil.
Lucas had a storied career with the Terrapins, earning All-American status in both basketball and tennis. A three-time All-American on the basketball court, Lucas is one of two Terrapins in history to earn three first team all-conference nods (Juan Dixon). On the tennis court, he won a pair of ACC singles titles (1974, 1976).
A native of Durham, N.C., Lucas became the first player in program history to record 2,000 career points and 500 assists. Lucas and Greivis Vasquez are the only players in Maryland history to reach 2,000 points and 500 assists.
Lucas helped head coach Lefty Driesell's Terrapins to a pair of NCAA Elite Eight appearances, while finishing ranked in the top-10 all four seasons (1972-76).
He became the first player in program history selected with the No. 1 overall pick by the Houston Rockets in the 1976 NBA Draft. Joe Smith (1995) is the only other Terrapin to be selected No. 1 overall.
Lucas went on to play 14 years in the NBA and was a member of the Rockets' 1986 NBA Finals team. He was named NBA All-Rookie First Team in 1977.Â
He has coached for a number of NBA organizations since his retirement as a player, including stints as a head coach with San Antonio, Philadelphia and Cleveland.
Lucas currently serves as an assistant coach for the Houston Rockets.
