No. 2 Terps Fall At No. 5 Penn State, 5-1

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA -- The No. 2 Terps dropped just their second game of the season and first since Sept. 20 with a 5-1 loss to No. 5 Penn State in a tough battle between two of the premier teams in the nation. It was also Maryland's first conference loss of the season in eight chances.

Danielle Van Rootselaar continued her year-long scoring prowess with an early goal, the lone score of the night for the Terps.

Marking some good news for the Terps, Hope Rose, Maryland's leading goal-scorer before she missed the past five games with an injury, played for the first time since Sept. 25 and logged one shot on goal.

With the loss, Maryland moved to 14-2 overall and 7-1 in B1G play while Penn State is now 14-2, 6-1.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps struck first less than five minutes into the game as Van Rootselaar capitalized on a penalty corner off passes from Bibi Donraadt and Nathalie Fiechter. The goal was Van Rootselaar's 11th and Donraadt's assist was her 10th of the year. Both are good for team-highs.
  • Penn State scored the next three goals and took a 4-1 lead into halftime.
  • Both defenses buckled down in the third quarter and neither side was able to notch a goal.
  • Penn State's Jemma Punch added a goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game to bring the final to 5-1.

Up Next
  • The Terps return home and host Virginia on Wednesday at 5 pm EST. That game will air on B1G+.
