FINAL FOUR BOUND! No. 2 Terps Top No. 8 Syracuse In NCAA Quarterfinals, 3-2, In Shootout

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 2 Terps advanced to their 21st Final Four in 35 seasons under head coach Missy Meharg with a dramatic 3-2 shootout victory over No. 8 Syracuse on Sunday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Hope Rose scored the decisive shootout goal to send the Terps back to the NCAA Semifinals for the second year in a row. The teams were even at 2-2 after five rounds of the shootout sending it to extra frames. Rose scored to put the Terps up in the shootout and then Syracuse's Charlotte deVries shot wide to give the Terps the win.

Goalie Paige Kieft, who didn't play in regulation or overtime, came on to play in the shootout and after allowing Syracuse to score the first two goals to take a 2-0 lead, did not allow a goal in the final four frames of the shootout to secure the 3-2 edge in the shootout.  Freshman Sophie Klautz scored what looked to be the game-winning goal with 5:40 left in regulation, putting Maryland ahead 2-1. But, Syracuse answered a little more than a minute later as Eefke van den Nieuwenhof converted a penalty corner to tie the game at 2-2 sending Maryland to overtime for the second NCAA Tournament game in a row.

Emma DeBerdine, who assisted the Klautz's late goal, tied the game at 1-1, 49 seconds into the fourth quarter after Syracuse's defense thwarted the Terps' powerful offense to that point.

The third-seeded Terps (19-3 overall), hunting for their ninth NCAA Tournament championship, will now head to Storrs, Connecticut for an NCAA Tournament Semifinal matchup against No. 2 seed Northwestern on Friday at either Noon or 3 p.m.

Maryland dominated in shots and penalty corners holding advantages of 17-11 and 11-4 in both categories, but the Terps were not able to capitalize until the final period. Syracuse's Brooke Borzymowski made 10 saves.

The Terps are now 27-3 in NCAA Tournament games at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex, including winning the 2010 national title on their home field.

Syracuse finished the year with a 16-6 record.

Missy's Take
"I'm so proud of the team. They're so gritty, so resilient, so coachable. We had to make some adjustments after the first quarter on how we were pressing their backs, and they just responded so well. And we were patient. We knocked at the door, knocked at the door. A goalie we hadn't seen play like that played a great game. I applaud Syracuse; they're a phenomenal team. But just so proud of the Maryland women."

From The Girls
"It's pretty great," Rose said of advancing to her second consecutive Final Four. "We had the same feeling last year so being able to get that feeling back is amazing. Paige had a great time, Christina saved our butts a couple times during the game. Overall, a great game."

"It feels excellent," Kieft added. "You come into Maryland knowing that you're part of a legacy, but it's another thing to actually have going to two finals fours. You never get used to that feeling, it's fresh every time. You feel a part of something special, part of something greater."

  • The Orange tied the game at 2-2 on van den Nieuwenhof's goal off a corner with 4:06 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Both teams had chances on penalty corners in the first overtime, but were not able to convert the winning goal.
