COLLEGE PARK – The No. 22 Maryland baseball team walked off the UMBC Retrievers, 3-2, in its home opener in front of 1,027 fans on Wednesday afternoon at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium.
Chris Alleyne doubled to lead off the ninth inning, advanced on a fly ball by
Matt Shaw and was brought home by
Nick Lorusso on a line drive up the middle.
The Terps did a lot of their damage in the third inning as
Luke Shliger homered and Alleyne later scored on an RBI groundout by Lorusso.
Freshman Noah Mrotek finished the game and earned his first career victory, striking out two Retrievers to set the stage for the walk-off win.
With the win, the Terps are now 4-0 for the third time in the last eight years.
4-0 Start
- This is the 12th time Maryland baseball has started a season 4-0 with the last coming in 2020. The other year Maryland started 4-0 are 1927, 1935, 1938, 1946, 1953, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1987 and 2015.
- The Terps' best start ever was 5-0, which has been done five times, most recently in 1968.
Strong Start For Ott
- Starting pitcher Logan Ott threw four scoreless inning before allowing a pair of runs in the fifth when he left the game after throwing 55 pitches.
- Ott struck out three batters and scattered six hits.
Notable Numbers
- Ryan Van Buren made his collegiate debut, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up zero runs.
- Will Glock pitched a clean 1-2-3 seventh inning in his season debut.
- Lorusso had his first multi-hit game of the season, going 2-3 with two singles.
