BUIES CREEK, NC – The No. 22 Maryland baseball team swept its second straight road series to open the season, downing the Campbell Camels 9-2 at Jim Perry Stadium on Saturday evening. The victory is the 100th career victory for head coach
Rob Vaughn, all coming in his five seasons with the Terps (7-0).
Jason Savacool was dominant on the mound, setting a career-high with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work (101 pitches), giving up just four hits, two runs, and walking just one.
The Terps broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring four runs with
Maxwell Costes,
Drew Grace, and
Luke Shliger all notching RBIs in the inning. Maryland scored two more in the fifth inning after back-to-back doubles from Costes and
Troy Schreffler Jr.
Maryland plated two more in the eighth as
Michael Bouma and Grace scored on a wild pitch and RBI single from
Nick Lorusso, respectively.
Shliger led off the game with a double and later scored on an error by Campbell.
Notable Numbers
- 10: Jason Savacool set his career-high with 10 strikeouts. His previous high of seven came at Illinois on May 8, 2021.
- 7: Seven different Terps scored a run on Saturday night as Bobby Zmarzlak (2), Costes (2), Shliger, Nick Lorusso, Bouma, Grace, and Schreffler Jr. all crossed the plate.
- 2: Three Terps had at least two hits with Shliger (3), Costes, and Schreffler Jr. all getting at least two knocks. Shliger and Costes both also had two RBIs.
- 1: Matt Orlando made his first appearance of the season and recorded his first career strikeout. Freshman Ryan Van Buren also collected his first career K and struck out two in total.
