COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's basketball team (22-8) will face 12^h-seeded Florida Gulf Coast (30-2) in the NCAA Second Round Sunday at 3 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Sunday's game will be televised on ESPN.

The winner of Sunday's game will advance to the Sweet Sixteen in Spokane next weekend.

What's UP

Including this season, the Terps have earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last 12 seasons. This is Maryland's 29th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Terps are 49-27 (.645) all-time in the NCAA Tournament. In their 16 appearances under head coach Brenda Frese, the Terrapins are 37-15 (.712). Frese has led the Terrapins to nine Sweet Sixteens, six Elite Eights, three Final Fours and the 2006 NCAA Championship.
The Terrapins have earned a top-four seed 21 times in their 29 NCAA Tournament appearances and 14 times in head coach Brenda Frese's 20 postseasons. The Terps are 14-11 in Second Round games and 9-6 under Frese.
Most recently, the fourth-seeded Terrapins cruised past 13th-seeded Delaware, 102-71, Friday in the NCAA First Round. Ashley Owusu went 10-14 from the floor for 24 points and Diamond Miller added 23 points to reach 1,000 career points. Katie Benzan went 5-7 from outside the arc for 17 points. Angel Reese scored 15 points and Chloe Bibby added 11 points.
The Terps are No. 8 in the country in scoring (78.9). Angel Reese is second in the nation in offensive rebounds (5.4) and No. 16 in double-doubles (17). She is leading the Big Ten in rebounds (322) and in double-doubles. Katie Benzan is No. 10 in the country and is second in the Big Ten in assist/turnover ratio (2.78). She is seventh in the nation and No. 2 in the league in three-point percentage (.447).
Angel Reese earned All-Big Ten First Team honors from the league's head coaches and media panel. She was also named to the All-Big Ten Defensive Team. Chloe Bibby, Diamond Miller and Ashley Owusu earned All-Big Ten Second Team honors from both groups. Katie Benzan earned Second Team honors from the media panel and Honorable Mention honors from the coaches. Shyanne Sellers was named Big Ten Sixth Player of the Year and was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Sophomore Angel Reese was one of 15 players in the country named to the Naismith Defensive Player of the Watch List on Jan. 25. Reese and junior Ashley Owusu were named to the Wooden Award Late Top 20 List on Jan. 31. Reese was named to the Katrina McClain Award Watch List and Owusu was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List this week. Junior Diamond Miller and Owusu were named to the Wooden Top 50, Watch Watch and Naismith Trophy watch lists to start the season.
Katie Benzan was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award in December.
The 2021-22 Terrapins return all five starters from last year's Big Ten championship squad. The Terps also return 10 of 11 letterwinners and 93 percent of their scoring from last year's team that led the nation in scoring (90.8).
Maryland is ranked No. 13 in the latest AP Poll and in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Terps were ranked No. 4 in the AP Preseason Poll, as well as in the Sports Illustrated and NCAA.com Preseason Polls.
The Terps were picked to win the Big Ten by the league's head coaches and media panel. Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller were both named to the 10-player Preseason All-Big Ten Team.
Four Terps were named to watch lists for national player of the year for their respective positions. Owusu was named to the Nancy Lieberman Award Watch List (point guard), Miller and Katie Benzan were named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List (shooting guard) and Chloe Bibby was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List (small forward).

Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 20th season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 534-139 (.794), 14 conference titles, 18 NCAA Tournament bids in 20 postseasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, six Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship.
Frese was named National Coach of the Year by the AP, The Athletic and ESPN at the end of the 2020-21 season. In October, Frese was the first woman inducted into the Washington DC Metro Basketball Hall of Fame.
With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14, 2021, Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).
