Softball Falls In 10 Innings At Penn State, 2-1

STATE COLLEGE, PA — With her team down to its last strike, Trinity Schlotterbeck ripped one down the right-field line. Pinch-runner Kamryn Davis was running on contact with two outs, allowing her to come all the way home from first base.

It had been a big day — rather, two days — for Schlotterbeck. She backed up a strong start in the circle with the biggest hit of the game at that point, which answered Penn State's icebreaking score in the last of the sixth — and knotted the game at one.

Maryland softball went on to battle for 10 innings with the Nittany Lions. But in the end, more than 24 hours after Megan Mikami led off the game with a single, Penn State's Mel Coombs jacked a walk-off solo home run over the left-field fence. And the Nittany Lions took a tight one, 2-1.

It was the first Big Ten contest of the season for both teams. Maryland (13-15) outhit Penn State (18-11), as the Terps recorded seven hits against the Nittany Lions' six.

The game started on Thursday afternoon and was a stalemate between the Terrapins and Nittany Lions. The game was still scoreless when it was paused due to rain, and both sides had recorded two hits apiece. The action resumed Friday evening at 5 p.m.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Both sides got their leadoff hitters on board in the first, with Megan Mikami starting the game with a single and Penn State's Cassie Lindmark drawing a walk. Neither of them scored, and the contest quickly became a pitchers' duel.
  • Taylor Okada led off the fifth inning with a single, marking the Terps' second hit.
  • Kiley Goff singled in the top of the sixth when the action resumed.
  • Penn State's Mel Coombs singled and swiped second in the home half of the sixth, then came around and scored the game's first run on an RBI single from Lauren Marcotte.
  • Down to its final out, Maryland stayed alive with a Taylor Okada infield single. Freshman Kamryn Davis pinch-ran for her, representing the tying run.
  • Schlotterbeck, down to her final strike, roped a double that scored Davis — tying the game at one.
  • Mikami collected her second hit of the day with two outs in the top of the eighth.
  • Michaela Jones reached base in the top of the 10th on a hit by pitch and advanced on a sacrifice bunt but didn't score.
  • With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Coombs delivered the heroics for the home team.
Schlotterbeck's Strong Outing
  • It had been a dominant outing for junior pitcher Trinity Schlotterbeck when the game was suspended — she had surrendered just two hits over five innings of work, striking out six and walking one.
  • She went the distance, finishing with nine strikeouts, six hits, a pair of walks and two runs over 9.1 innings.
  • Her nine strikeouts were a career-high.
Up Next
  • It was the first of a three-game set against the Nittany Lions to open up Big Ten play. The next game will start at approximately 6:40 p.m.
  • The action can be seen on Big Ten Plus.
