COLLEGE PARK, MD — No. 3 Maryland women's lacrosse suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon as it fell to No. 15 James Madison, 13-8, on Senior Day at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

Hannah Leubecker and Libby May registered hat tricks for the Terps. It was Leubecker's seventh in her last eight games and May's fourth of the season.

The Terps (8-1) and the Dukes (6-4) went back and forth for much of the first half, before a third quarter run pushed James Madison ahead for good.

Before the game, Maryland honored its eight seniors and fifth years: Torie Barretta, Sydney Bender, Abby Bosco, Aurora Cordingley, Grace Griffin, Julia Hoffman, Maddie McSally and Darby Welsh.

Breaking Down The Action

While James Madison jumped out to a 4-3 lead at the end of the first quarter, Maryland was still outshooting the Dukes, 6-4. Libby May, Shaylan Ahearn and Hannah Leubecker netted goals for the Terrapins.
The Terps and Dukes continued trading goals throughout the first half, with neither side gaining an advantage of more than two. They were all tied up, 6-6, at halftime.
As Maryland went about 27 minutes without a goal, James Madison scored four times in the third period and opened a 10-6 advantage. Libby May found the cage with 16 seconds left in the third — her second of the day — to trim the deficit to three.
James Madison scored again early in the fourth, but Cordingley answered with her first goal of the game to make it 11-8. But that was the last time Maryland would score, as the Dukes scored two more times and took this one, 13-8 — their first win over the Terps since 2003.

Hat Trick Hannah

Not only did Hannah Leubecker record her 16th hat trick in a Maryland uniform, she had it early in the second quarter.
She scored three straight goals over roughly a six-minute span that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead. It brought the junior attacker to 30 goals on the season, second to Aurora Cordingley's 33.
