COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 23 Maryland baseball team clobbered the Towson Tigers, 26-8, on Tuesday afternoon at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium. The Terps (19-5) notched 23 hits, including four home runs.
Nick Lorusso collected a team-best six RBIs.
Troy Schreffler Jr., went 4-for-7 with five RBI.
The 26 runs are the most Maryland has scored since beating Coppin State, 27-0, on March 14, 2007. The Terps scored at least four runs in five different innings.
Maryland's 23 hits was just shy of the school record of 25 most recently accomplished in that Coppin State game.
In addition to Schreffler's four-hit game, four other Maryland batters had three hits: Lorusso (3-for-4), Matt Shaw (3-for-4), Maxwell Costes (3-for-4), Riley Langerman (3-for-4).
In addition to Lorusso driving in six runs and Schreffler Jr., bringing up five, three other Terps had multiple RBIs with Shaw and Costes driving in three and Drew Grace recording two RBIs.
Luke Shliger and Lorusso both also scored four runs in the ballgame.
Costes Crushing It
- Maxwell Costes now has 34 career home runs, tying Will Frazier's 34 in 2002-05 for second on the all-time Maryland chart.
- Costes now trails Paul Schager's program record of 43, which he hit 43 between 1984-87.
Breaking Down The Action
- The Terps started off hot in the first inning, scoring four runs thanks in part to a two-run home run by Matt Shaw to lead 4-0.
- Four more runs followed in the second on the back of a two-RBI single from Lorusso and Troy Schreffler Jr. RBI single, making it 8-1 after two innings.
- The third inning was a home run derby as Lorusso, Costes, and Schreffler Jr. all homered in the bottom half of the frame as the lead expanded to 14-4.
- Costes added two more RBIs in the fourth and several passed balls allowed the Terps to pad their lead to 19-4 after five inning.
- Towson scored four runs in the sixth and seventh to get back to withing 19-8.
- The Terps added on seven more runs on seven hits in the seventh to get to 26 runs, their most in 15 years. Grace and Schreffler each drove in a pair in the inning.

- Andrew Johnson threw two hitless and scorelss innings in relief with three strikeouts.
- Nigel Belgrave threw a scoreless eighth inning with two Ks.
- Matt Orlando finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth with two Ks

- 1: Michael Bouma had his first hit and RBI of the season as he went 2-for-3.
