MICHIGAN STATE STORYLINES
Maryland-Michigan State: The Series
- This is Maryland's fourth meeting with Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament since joining the league in 2014-15 - more than any other opponent.
- This marks the second consecutive season Maryland and Michigan State will meet in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament, as the Terrapins defeated the Spartans, 68-57, last year.
- Then-junior Eric Ayala scored a game-high 21 points (10-11 FT) and added nine rebounds and four assists in the victory. Both Ayala's 10 makes and 11 attempts were program records in the Big Ten Tournament.
Russell Report
- Graduate guard Fatts Russell earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten honors from both the coaches and media, as announced Tuesday by the Big Ten.
- Russell has been on a tear recently, averaging 20.9 points on 44.1-percent shooting over his last eight games.
- He has scored at least 16 points in every game during that span, including a season-best 27 points vs. then-No. 22 Ohio State.
LIVING AT THE LINE
- Maryland is currently first in the Big Ten in both free throws made (456) and free throw percentage (.760), while ranking third in free throws attempted (600).
- The effort has been led by Fatts Russell, who is fourth among active Division I players with 533 career free throws made.
EYES ON AYALA
- On Tuesday, Eric Ayala was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten for the second consecutive season.
- Against Michigan State (3/6), Ayala knocked down five 3-pointers, further climbing Maryland's all-time 3-pointers list with 221. He currently sits third, trailing only Juan Dixon (239) and Greivis Vasquez (230).
- His 72 3-pointers this season rank seventh in program single-season history, and he looks to pass Drew Nicholas and Kevin Huerter, who both had 73, for fifth.
- Ayala also ranks 21st in program history with 1,432 points, and can pass Jake Layman (1,436) for 20th with five points today.
GOTTA HAVE HART
- Maryland is 11-2 this season when junior Hakim Hart has at least two steals in a game.
- He is currently fourth in the conference with 1.52 steals/g.
