COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland softball players poured out of their dugout as soon as the ball left the bat. They popped out instantly, jumping up and down as the crowd at the Maryland Softball Stadium roared.
Michigan center fielder Kristina Burkhardt leaped in front of the Maryland flag displayed on the left-field wall, but the softball was out of reach.
Pitcher
Trinity Schlotterbeck had just crushed a two-run dinger in the first inning. It was the junior's second career home run — and her second in the last four games — and powered the Terrapins to a 5-1 win against No. 22 Michigan on Thursday evening.
That blast gave Maryland (22-16, 8-2 B1G) a 2-0 lead in the first inning. From there, the Terps didn't look back — and tacked on three more in the fifth.
It was the Maryland's first victory against the Wolverines (24-13, 4-6 B1G) since April 15, 2017.
Schlotterbeck pitched a complete game, surrendering just the one run on nine hits while striking out four.
Breaking Down The Action
- Trinity Schlotterbeck's big fly put Maryland ahead, 2-0, in the first inning.
- The Wolverines got a couple of runners on base in the 2nd, but Jaeda McFarland made a diving catch in center field to end the threat.
- Michigan strung three straight hits together in the 3rd inning, the second of which knocked in the Wolverines' first and only run.
- Michaela Jones led off the last of the 5th inning with a double, and Regan Kerr pinch-ran for her. Ruby Butler bunted Kerr over to third, and Megan Mikami drove her home with a two-out RBI single.
- Mikami swiped second base to put herself in scoring position. Jaeda McFarland hit one just past the infield, and Mikami dashed home to score the Terps' fourth run of the day.
- The two-out rally continued as McFarland also stole second, and Mackense Greico drove her home to open a 5-1 lead.
- Schlotterbeck kept rolling and kept Michigan off the board as the Terps rolled to their 5-1 victory.
