PITTSBURGH, PA – The Maryland Women's Golf team finished sixth at the 40th Big Ten Conference Women's Golf Championship (Apr. 22-24). Junior Maria Vittoria Corbi led for the #GolfTerps, placing in solo fifth, posting 69-71-74 (+1). This marks her first top-ten finish of the season and ties her career-low round at Maryland (69). Corbi was fourth in the field in par-5 scoring with a scoring average of 4.56 (-4). The final round was also Corbi's 21st birthday!
"Maria Vittoria Corbi stepped up in a big way this week after struggling with her confidence leading up to the event," said head coach Kelly Hovland. "Her composure and intention were on an elite level for three rounds, and I am excited for her to come back for two more years having this experience to build off of."
84 Big Ten student-athletes teed it up over the three-day event at the par-71 - Fox Chapel Golf Club playing at 6,045 yards.
The Team
-Sophomore Patricie Mackova finished six-way for 6th (+2) - - (70-74-71)
- Mackova was third in the field in par-3 scoring with a scoring average of 2.92 (-2).
-This marks her fifth top-ten finish of the season.
-Freshman Panassaya Somchit finished in a two-way tie for 14th (+5) - - (72-70-76)
- Somchit was fourth in the field in birdies made with 12.
-Sophomore Karla Elena Vázquez Setzer finished in a three-way tie for 64th (+19) (83-74-75)
-Junior Angela Garvin finished in a three-way tie for 68th (+21) - - (77-76-81)
-Senior Elena Verticchio finished in a four-way tie for 83rd (+31) - - (80-82-82)
Maryland as a team ranked third in par-5 scoring with an average of 4.91 (-1).
Honors
-Maria Vittoria Corbi and Patricie Mackova made the All-Championship team.
-The Big Ten Conference recognized seniors Elena Verticchio and Lena Capoccia for their collegiate playing.
From the Coaches Eye - Hovland's Analysis…
"We fought hard today and made a great charge in the front nine to pull within striking distance, but the back nine was extremely challenging today for the entire field, and we just didn't have what it took to finish the job," head coach Hovland. "I am really proud of this team and their grit to put us in a position to have a chance on the back nine. I think we will look back at this tournament as a pivotal experience for our young players in their journey to becoming BIG Ten champions!"
On Patricie Mackova: "Patricie battled all weekend long, and I'm so proud of her All-Championship team performance. She has firmly placed herself as one of the She has led our team all year, and I look forward to seeing what she can do in the postseason! top players in the Big Ten and proved it again this weekend."
On Panassaya Somchit: "Panassaya's first Big Ten Championship experience is just the beginning of her young career. She is emerging as one of the best players in the conference, and I am so happy she finished her freshman season on such a high note!"
"Maria Vittoria, Patricie, and Panassaya gave us a chance to win, but we weren't able to add the fourth score we needed to put us over the top. We were the only team to have three players in the top-15, and I am so excited for this young group to take the momentum into the offseason and set us up for an exciting season next year!"
