COLLEGE PARK, MD – The No. 9 Maryland women's lacrosse pummeled the Penn State Nittany Lions, 13-6, inside the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Thursday night. The Terps (11-1, 3-0) were powered by
Aurora Cordingley as the graduate transfer notched six points (five goals and one assist).
"Penn State vs. Maryland is always a great game," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "I thought we executed our game plan really well. Defensively we did a really nice job against their attackers and Emily (Sterling) was phenomenal in goal. We did an excellent job clearing the ball and offensively we got a lot of production from a lot of diffferent people. It was a good night for us."
Goalie
Emily Sterling set a new career-high in saves with 13, this coming after being named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week this week after notching 18 saves and only allowing six goals over two games. Sterling now has a .560 save percentage on the season to lead the nation.
Eloise Clevenger (three goals and one assist) finished with a career-high in goals and four points while
Victoria Hensh also scored two goals.
Breaking Down The Action
- Four different Terps scored in the first quarter with Hensh, Clevenger, Kate Sites, and Cordingley all getting on the scoresheet, with Maryland taking a 4-2 lead after one.
- Clevenger opened the scoring in the second, with Jordyn Lipkin, Grace Griffin, and Cordingley all following, allowing the Terps to double up Penn State 8-4 at halftime.
- Cordingley completed her hat trick with her third goal two and a half minutes into the game, but that was the only goal of the quarter for Maryland. Strong defense from the likes of Abby Bosco and great goalkeeping from Sterling kept Penn State equally as stifled as the Penn State only notched one goal as well.
- After more spectacular saves from Sterling, Cordingley scored her fourth goal, pushing the Terp lead to 10-5. Cordingley tallied another and Clevenger completed her hat trick midway through the fourth quarter as Maryland began pulling away. Sterling would set her new career-high in saves with a stop with just under seven minutes left in the game. Hensh would add her second of the game in the final few minutes.
