No. 23 Terps Power Past Minnesota, 11-7

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – No. 23 Maryland blasted five home runs as the Terps continued their best start in school history with an 11-7 victory at Minnesota on a sunny Friday afternoon at Siebert Field. The Terps are now 24-6 and 3-1 in the Big Ten, compiling the best 30-game start for the program.

Luke Shliger, Bobby Zmarzlak, Chris Alleyne, Nick Lorusso, and Matt Shaw all hit homers in the victory. It is the most home runs Maryland has hit in a game since June 5th of last year when they hit seven against Norfolk State in the Greenville Regional.

Shaw reached base all six times he batted with four walks, a single, and a solo home run.

Lorusso went 2-for-6 with two RBIs and a towering two-run home run in the sixth inning. Lorusso now has a 16-game hitting streak, three shy of the school record of 19 by Garry Maddox (April 2-27, 1996). Lorusso has now reached base in 30 consecutive games, surpassing the recent streak of Brandon Lowe of 29 games during the 2015 season.

Shliger was 2-of-5 with a run scored and one RBI. Shliger smacked the first pitch of the game over the right-centerfield wall to give the Terps a 1-0 lead. It was Maryland's first leadoff home run since Alleyne had one on May 1, 2021, also against Minnesota.

Troy Schreffler Jr. went 2-for-4, including an RBI double in the first inning.

On the mound, Nick Dean went six innings, striking out six batters and allowing three runs. Freshman Noah Mrotek relieved Dean and surrendered two runs. Nick Robinson pitched 1.2 innings for the Terps, also allowing two runs. Sean Heine came in with two outs in the ninth and got the final out.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Shliger homered on the first pitch of the ballgame to put the Terps up 1-0. Troy Schreffler Jr.'s double brought home Matt Shaw to make 2-0.
  • The Gophers answered with a solo homer by Drew Stahl and an RBI single by Kyle Bork to even the game at 2-2 after one inning.
  • Zmarzlak's two-run bomb to rightfield scored Schreffler Jr., to make it 4-2. The Alleyne knocked a two-run homer to right, to make it 6-2, Terps, in the fourth inning.
  • Lorusso hit the team's third two-run homer of the day in the sixth inning and it widened the Maryland lead to 8-3.
  • After the Gophers got two runs back in the seventh to make it 8-5, Shaw cranked a solo homer to right-center to give the Terps a four run lead once more. Two more scored in the inning as Zmarzlak scored on a wild pitch and Sean Lane drove in Schreffler Jr., making it 11-5.
