COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 2 seed Maryland used a 10-goal run bridging the halves to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 19-6 victory over No. 13 Duke, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at The Plex. The Terps improved to 18-1 overall with their 10th win in a row. The Terps will play No. 7 seed Florida on Thursday, May 19 at Noon. The game will air on ESPNU.
"Congratulations to Duke on an outstanding season, we knew this was going to be a hard fought game," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "Our team showed up to play. We settled in defensively after the first quarter and our offense was taking advantage of every opportunity in the second quarter. Shay (Ahearn) did a tremendous job on the draw against one of the best in the game. Really proud of my groups effort and excited to keep moving on."
Libby May scored a team-best five goals, with three coming in the 10-0 run, to led the Terps.
Eloise Clevenger tallied three goals and had an assist for four-point game.
Jordyn Lipkin had her second-career hat trick and added an assist for four points.
Shaylan Ahearn,
Grace Griffin and
Shannon Smith, and each scored two goals. The offense was potent from all areas as the team's top two goal scorers entering the game,
Aurora Cordingley and
Hannah Leubecker, each scored one goal.
The Terps thrived in the draw circle, winning the battle 18-10. Ahearn was phenomenal in the circle, winning nine draws against one of the best draw teams in the nation statistically.
The Terps dominated the Blue Devils in all areas of the game, outshooting them 37-13 and controlling the game throughout.
Duke finishes its season at 16-4.
Breaking Down The Action
• Clevenger opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first 3:49. Griffin and May added two more to put the Terps up 4-0 with 7:05 left in the first quarter. Duke reeled off three goals in a row to get back within on at 4-3. May added scored her second of the game to make it 5-3 after the first quarter.
• The Terps opened the flood gates in the second quarter outscoing Duke 10-2 with a run of eight goals in a row to end the half and lead 15-5 at halftime. The eight goals came in the final 9:34 of the half with May scoring three times and single tallies coming from Leubecker, Ahearn, Smith, Cordingley and Lipkin.
• Maryland's Griffin and Ahearn added two more to open the third quarter to finish the 10-goal spurt and giving the Terps a 17-5 lead. Duke's Anna Callahan ended a Duke drought of more than 23 minutes.
Tourney Time
• Maryland is playing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament having won four of the last seven National Championships, last winning in 2019.
• The Terps lead the nation with 37 NCAA appearances and are also tops in wins (76), championship game appearances (22) and NCAA titles (14). The Terps are making their 32nd consecutive appearance in the postseason (1990-2021).
• The Terps have made 11 of the past 12 Final Fours dating back to 2009.

Cathy Reese, Maryland has five National Championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019). Reese is now 39-9 at Maryland in the NCAA Tournament, making 11 Final Fours and seven championship games.
