BALTIMORE, MD -- Boston College rallied to score the final four goals of the game to beat second-seeded Maryland, 17-16, on Friday evening at Homewood Field. The Terps' season finishes at 19-2.
Hannah Leubecker tallied a season-high tying five goals as she became the third Terp this season with 60 or more goals.
Libby May continued her torrid play in the postseason as she scored three goals and added two assists for a five-point day. May finished with 64 goals this season, including 20 in the postseason.
Eloise Clevenger scored a pair of goals, including a nifty backhand scoop to finish a four-goal burst to end the first half, putting the Terps up 7-6 at halftime.
Maryland finishes the season at 19-2, earning both the Big Ten Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The Terps made their 28th Final Four in program history, the 12th in the last 13 seasons.
Boston College cut Maryland's lead to one goal five different times in the second half, but wasn't able to tie the game until Charlotte North scored with three minutes left in the game to tie the game at 16-16.
Jordyn Lipkin scored two goals and added two assists for four points.
Shaylan Ahearn won nine draws, she also scored a goal. Maryland's other goals came from
Aurora Cordingley,
Grace Griffin and
Shannon Smith.
Breaking Down The Action
• The teams traded goals in the opening quarter with May scoring both of the Terps' goals as she answered North and Kayla Martello for a 2-2 score after 15 minutes. Sterling had five saves in the first quarter.
• Boston College took a 6-3 lead as North scored back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter. But, Maryland reeled off four goals in a row to take a 7-6 lead into halftime. Ahearn, Leubecker,
Shannon Smith and
Eloise Clevenger scored in the final 3:25 of the half to put the Terps on top. Clevenger's goal with 53 seconds left in the half was a stunner with a backhand scoop shot to the right side of the net.
• Cordingley got on the scoreboard with her team-best 67th goal of the season 27 seconds into the second half. Leubecker's third of the game gave the Terps a 9-7 lead.
Jordyn Lipkin's goal pushed the Terps' lead to 10-8. The Terps and Eagles alternated eight goals in the third quarter, to make it 11-10 heading to the fourth.
• Leubecker's fourth of game opened the fourth quarter as the teams continued to trade goals. The alternating finally ended with Clevenger scored her second of the game, making it 13-10. The Terps took a 16-13 lead on Lipkin's second of the game with seven minutes left. Boston College scored the next three goals to tie the game at 16-16 as North scored her sixth goal of the game with 3:06 left in regulation. Weeks scored the game-winner with 18 seconds left in the fourth.
