SPARKS, MD -- The
second season of the Athletes Unlimited Professional Women's Lacrosse League is set to begin on Thursday evening on ESPN2 and six Terps are ready to compete over the four week season that will run from July 21 to August 14 at USA Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, MD.
Alex Aust Holman ('13),
Lizzie Colson ('21),
Aurora Cordingley ('22), Megan Douty ('15),
Grace Griffin ('22) and Kelly McPartland ('15) all signed with the league to play over the summer as part of the 56 player roster.
Last season, three-time Tewaaraton winner Taylor Cummings won the league, earning the most points throughout the season. Aust, Douty and McPartland are returning to the league for their second stint this summer while Colson, Cordingley and Griffin are all rookies.
The league will have a unique format with new teams being drafted every week. The top four players become captains each week and draft their teams from scratch for following week's games. In the scoring system, every player can lose or win points during every game. Athletes score points as individuals and as a team to win MVP titles and cash bonuses.
The games will begin tonight, Thursday, July 21 on ESPN2 with Team Glynn taking on Team Apuzzo at 6:30 p.m. and Team Waters taking on Team Read at 9:00 p.m. There will be games on the ESPN Family of Networks all weekend long. Rosters will reset each week and games will be played over the weekends, all at USA Lacrosse Headquarters.
Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse will play a short form, fast paced format consisting of eight-minute quarters, 10v10 gameplay and a 60-second shot clock all housed on an 90yd x 60yd playing field. Play will begin with draws at the beginning of each quarter as well as after every goal.
