B1g Time
- The Terps began Big Ten play on Friday September 23 against the Illinois Fighting Illini, falling in four sets.Â
- Last season the Terps went 7-13 in conference. The victories featured wins over Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan State, Rutgers, and Northwestern.
- The 2022 Big Ten slate was highlighted with a conference-opening victory over then-No.2 Wisconsin, the eventual National Champions.
Rainelle's Records
- Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, and fourth time in her career, Rainelle Jones continues to be one of the nation's best defensive players.
- Jones entered the weekend leading the nation with 1.83 blocks per set and 77 total blocks. She led the NCAA last season with 1.73 blocks per set and 187 total blocks.
- The Oxon Hill, Maryland, native currently sits second all-time in program history with 630Â total blocks. Her 574Â career blocking assists are already a Maryland program record. She's the 17th Big Ten player ever with 600 career blocks.
- Jones led all players with eight blocks in Friday's contest against Illinois.
Top tier defense
- Maryland entered the weekend atop the nation in blocks per set with 3.4 and the team's 148.5 total blocks are also an NCAA-best.
- Individually, Milan Gomillion entered the weekend fourth in the Big Ten with 164 digs per set while the Terps were fifth as a team with 538.
- Opponent's are hitting only .152 against Maryland's defense.Â
- The Terps boast four individuals in the top-five of total blocks in the Big Ten. Rainelle Jones and Anastasia are the top two in the premier volleyball conference while Sydney Dowler and Laila Ricks are tied for fifth.
- The Terps had seven more blocks than Illinois on Friday night and have out-blocked every opponent this season.Â
