COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Terps (2-2-5, 1-1-0) fell to the Illinois Fighting Illini (6-3-1, 1-1-0) in a well-attended home match against a tough Big Ten opponent.Â
Maryland played a strong first half, scoring a commanding goal on the first possession of the game and outshooting the Illini 7-2. However, the Illini scored three second-half goals to come out on top, 3-2.Â
Coach Meghan Ryan Nemzer's Take
"We played more into their game plan in the second half. We spoke about how the press was going to come and (the need) for flipping the field a little bit quicker. I think we got away from that. The moments that we did do that I thought we created dangerous opportunities. I actually think we created the most quality opportunities tonight, but I felt like we played into their game plan in the second half and we forget to execute our game plan.Â
Player's Perspective
"I think tonight, like Coach Meg said, we let the details get away,"
Alyssa Poarch said. "Illinois is a very high pressing team and when we slack and forget the moments that happened, they just capitalized on it."
Breaking Down The Action

- Strong Terp defense, including big kicks and speedy chase downs by Malikae Dayes, kept the Illini from finding any offensive rhythm early.

- Newly dubbed College Soccer New Women's National Team member Madeline Smith made a diving save off an Illinois set piece to keep the game at 1-0 heading into halftime. Â
- Maryland entered the second half energized, with close shots by Poarch and Mikayla Dayes.
- The Illini equalized on a goal by Syndey Stephens in the 57th minute that just got by Smith.
