Terps Can't Mount Comeback At Iowa, Fall 81-67

IOWA CITY, IOWA --  Down by 16 in the first half, Maryland rallied to within two early in the second half before falling 81-67 at Iowa. The Terps battled throughout the second half, but weren't able to complete the comeback.

Jahmir Young was the high-scorer for the Terps with 20 points along with five boards and three assists. Donta Scott (15 points and a season-high 11 rebounds) had his first double-double this season. Julian Reese added 10 points and six rebounds.

Tony Perkins scored a career-high 22 points for the Hawkeyes while Big Ten leading scorer Kris Murray had 19. Iowa has won four games in a row.

Maryland falls to 11-6 on the season, including a 2-4 mark in the Big Ten. Iowa improved to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in conference games.

Willard's Take

"I thought we took a step in the right direction, believe it or not. I thought we battled on the road. Got down 14 and kept battling. We came out in the second half and did some nice things. Just, our defensive intensity on the road is really lacking. I think that's the thing I'm noticing more than anything. Even when we make runs, we're not feeding off our runs and that's something we'll have to go back and watch the film, show these guys, and get back to work."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Reese scored the first six Maryland points as the Terps trailed 8-6 through the first 5:07 of action.
  • Scott and Reese each hit jumpers in the paint and then Scott converted a lay-up to give the Terps a 6-0 run that got them within 19-16 at the 7:22 mark.
  • Trailing by 16 points with two minutes left in the first half, Terps scored on their final four offensive possessions of the half, but the Hawkeyes were clicking offensively and carried a 43-33 lead into halftime. Both teams shot 50 percent or better in the first half, Maryland at 50.0 and Iowa at 57.6.
  • Maryland came out of the gates firing to start the second half as both Hakim Hart and Scott buried three-pointers and then Scott hit a hook shot to make it a 43-41 game.
  • Down 60-53 with 8:23 left to play, Reese picked up his fourth foul and had to head to the bench.
  • The Terps continued to find answers to Hawkeye runs the rest of the way, but were not able to get within striking distance in the final minutes.

Double-Figures Update
  • Young, coming off a 30-point game against No. 24 Ohio State, hit the double-figure mark for the 14th time this season in 17 games and the 89th time in his career. He scored all 12 of his first-half points in the final 4:34 before the intermission.
  • Scott recorded 15 points, reaching double figures for the 10th game this season and 55th time in his Terrapin career. Scott also posted his first double-double of the year adding a season-high 11 rebounds - that marked his fifth career double-double and first since Nov. 17, 2021 vs. George Mason last season.
  • Reese reached double-figures for the 7th time this season and the 14th time in his career. It also marked his second consecutive game in double-figures.

Fear The Jahmir
  • Young posted his fourth 20-point game of the season and the 36th of his career. Over the last three games he has averaged 21.0.

Donta In The Record Books
  • Scott moved up to a tie at No. 43 in the all-time scoring records for Maryland with 1,1136 career points. He passed Duane Simpkins (1992-96) and D.J. Strawberry (2003-07) and is currently tied with Brad Davis (1136, 1974-78) at No. 43 on the list.
  • Scott moved up in the rebounding ranks with 11 boards tonight. He now has 596 which moved him into No. 30 all-time, passing Tom Roy (586, 1972-75). Next on the list is Juan Dixon (1998-02) and Bob Kessler (1953-56) who are tied at No. 28 with 599 each.
 Notes and Nuggets

  • The Terps wore special MLK shooting shirts prior to the game to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, which was celebrated on Sunday and MLK Day will be observed on Monday.
  • Pavlo Dziuba saw his most meaningful game time this season, playing two minutes in the first half. He had played a total of eight minutes all season coming into the game.
