COLLEGE PARK, MD - Maryland Men's Basketball guard
Jahmir Young was named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Preseason Watch List in an announcement by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday. Young is one of 20 guards to be named to the watch list and one of only three Big Ten guards to be represented on the list.
Young is the first Maryland guard to be featured on the watch list since Anthony Cowan, Jr. in 2019. Young is the fourth Terrapin guard to be featured on the Bob Cousy Award Watch List, joining Greivis Vasquez, Melo Trimble, and the aforementioned Cowan, Jr.
Vasquez won the award in 2010 becoming the only Terrapin to receive the award.
The accolades continue to roll in for Young ahead of the 2023-24 season. Earlier this month, Young was announced as a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Young was the first unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten team since Cowan, Jr. in 2019. Young was also named a Preseason All-American by the Blue Ribbon and Lindy's Sports Magazines. Additionally, he was selected as a Preseason All-Big Ten First Team selection and noted as the No. 35 of 100 top players for the upcoming season by the Field of 68 Almanac.
Last season, Young averaged a team-high 15.8 points per game and was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the USBWA All-District Team, and the NABC All-District Second Team. His 553 points this past season ranked as the 30th best total for a single season in Maryland program history. Young tallied nine 20-point games on the year including a season-high 30 in the win over No. 24 Ohio State. Young helped lead Maryland to a 22-13 overall record last season which included a win over West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament, an undefeated home slate in Big Ten play, and a 16-1 overall home record in the XFINITY Center.
Named after Class of 1971 Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor, now in its 21st year, recognizes the top point guard in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
"The point guards that have been named to the 2024 Bob Cousy Award Watch List truly embody the skills and characteristics that made Bob Cousy the 'Houdini of the Hardwood,'" said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. "We look forward to watching their leadership and play-making abilities take center stage and working alongside Bob Cousy and the selection committee to narrow down the watch list throughout the season."
The Terrapins open the 2023-24 season at home on Nov. 7 as they host Mount St. Mary's at the XFINITY Center at 7 PM. Season tickets and mini-plans for the 2023-24 season are currently on sale now and can be purchased online at www.umterps.com, by calling the Terrapin Ticket Office at 800-462-TERP, or by emailing for more information at terptix@umd.edu.
