Jahmir Young Named to Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 Watch List

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- University of Maryland men's basketball guard Jahmir Young was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 List in an announcement on Tuesday. Young adds to his laundry list of preseason accolades that he has received ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the most prestigious honors in college basketball, the Wooden Award All American Teamâ„¢ and Most Outstanding Player Award. Young is the first Terrapins player to be named to the Preseason Wooden Award list since 2021, when Eric Ayala was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50.

Through three games this season Young is averaging 14.7 points per game with 5.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds. In Maryland's game against Davidson on Nov. 10, Young reached a career milestone by scoring his 2,000th point. Young became the only active player in the NCAA to have 2,000 career points, 600+ rebounds, and 350+ assists. Young is the second-leading active scorer in the nation behind Max Abmas of Texas. After scoring 14 points on Nov. 12 against UAB, Young currently stands at 2,018 career points. Young scored 1,421 points in his three years at Charlotte and now has 597 in his second year at Maryland.

Before the 2023 season started, Young was announced as a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team. Young was the first unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big Ten team since Cowan, Jr. in 2019. Young was also named a Preseason All-American by the Blue Ribbon and Lindy's Sports Magazines. Additionally, he was selected as a Preseason All-Big Ten First Team selection and noted as the No. 35 of 100 top players for the upcoming season by the Field of 68 Almanac.

Last season, Young averaged a team-high 15.8 points per game and was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team, the USBWA All-District Team, and the NABC All-District Second Team. His 553 points this past season ranked as the 30th best total for a single season in Maryland program history. Young tallied nine 20-point games on the year including a season-high 30 in the win over No. 24 Ohio State. Young helped lead Maryland to a 22-13 overall record last season which included a win over West Virginia in the NCAA Tournament, an undefeated home slate in Big Ten play, and a 16-1 overall home record in the XFINITY Center.

Created in 1976, the John R. Wooden Award Program hosts the most prestigious honors in college basketball recognizing The Wooden Award Most Outstanding Player for men and women, The Wooden Award All America Teams for men and women and the annual selection of the Wooden Award Legend of Coaching recipient. Honorees have proven to their university that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the John R. Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden and the Wooden Award Steering Committee, including making progress towards graduation and maintaining at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA.

Since its inception, the John R. Wooden Award has contributed nearly one million dollars to the universities' general scholarship fund in the names of the Wooden Award All American recipients and has sent more than 1,000 underprivileged children to week-long college basketball camps. Additionally, the John R. Wooden Award partners with the Special Olympics Southern California (SOSC) each year to host the Wooden Award Special Olympics Southern California Basketball Tournament.

The Terps return to action on Friday night, Nov. 17, at No. 21 Villanova as part of the Gavitt Tip-Off Games in Philadelphia at 8:30 p.m. The game airs on FS1 and can be heard on the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
