No. 1 Northwestern Edges No. 8 Terps, 1-0 In Double OT, In Big Ten Tournament Title Game

Box Score ANN ARBOR, MI – Three-seeded and eighth-ranked Maryland went toe-to-toe with  top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament Championship game before being edged 1-0 in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Ocker Field. 

Olivia Bent-Cole scored for the Wildcats in the second overtime to win the game with 2:21 left on the scoreboard. 

The Terps, fifth in the RPI, are now 16-5 overall and will await its NCAA Tournament opponent and locations when the bracket is released on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 10 p.m., on NCAA.com. Maryland has won nine of its last 11 games overall heading into the NCAA Tournament next weekend. 

Defense was the story of the game as the teams were scoreless for regulation and the first overtime.  

In goal, freshman Alyssa Klebasko made nine saves for Maryland. She made three clutch saves in the third quarter as the Wildcats peppered her. Defenders Rayne Wright and Josie Hollamon were stellar on defense throughout the game. 

  Northwestern outshot the Terps, 22-8, and had 17 penalty corners to three for Maryland. 

Northwestern (18-1) won its 18th game in a row and heads into the NCAA Tournament as the overall No. 1 team in the nation. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • The teams played a scoreless first quarter with the Terps were outshot by the Wildcats, 5-1. Klebasko made four saves in the first quarter 
  • Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the first half as the game was scoreless at halftime. 
  • The third quarter saw more big-time saves from Klebasko, including a clutch stop with a minute left in the quarter off a penalty corner as made a pair of saves in the final 60 seconds of the third. She made three saves in the third period as the game remained scoreless after 45 minutes. 
  • In the fourth quarter, Northwestern had several penalty corners, but the Terps' defense stood tall in keeping the scoreless heading to overtime. 
  • Hope Rose had the first shot in overtime, but was stopped by Northwestern's Annabel Skubisz, just 1:44 into the extra session. The Terps had the better of the possession in the first overtime period. Northwestern had six penalty corners in a span of four minutes late the first overtime but they were thwarted by the Terps' defense on all of their attempts. 
  • In the second overtime, Northwestern earned three penalty corners in the second extra session, but the Terps' defense was stout again. Bent-Cole scored the winner from the right side of the goal. 

Notable Numbers
  • 3: This was the third-ever Big Ten Tournament Championship game to go to overtime. 
  • 4: The Terps had another first-quarter shutout and have only allowed four goals in the first quarter all season. 
  • 9: Alyssa Klebasko made nine saves, second-most of her career. 
  • 81: Maura Verleg started her 81st game in a row in the championship game. 

Big Ten Tournament History
  • Maryland is now 14-8 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament winning the tournament titles in 2015 and 2018. 
  • The Terrapins played in their fifth Championship game, also advancing to the final in 2014 and 2016. 
  • Under head coach Missy Meharg, the Terrapins have won 12 conference tournament titles, including 10 when they were in the ACC.
