COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland men's soccer freshman forward
Kimani Stewart-Baynes was selected No. 4 overall by the Colorado Rapids in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft Tuesday afternoon.
Stewart-Baynes is the 56th Terp taken in the history of the SuperDraft and Maryland has had 19 selections in the last 20 SuperDrafts. He is the 26th first round selection in Maryland's SuperDraft history and it marks the third straight year in which the Terps have had a top-five pick.Â
"I am thrilled to see Kimani drafted fourth by the Colorado Rapids," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "Kimani has all the tools he needs to succeed in the professional ranks and fans in Colorado will love his incredible speed, creativity and nose for goal. It is one of our missions at Maryland to put our student-athletes in the position to achieve their dreams and I am delighted to see Kimani live out a dream today. I speak for the entire Maryland community when I say we are excited to see him continue to develop with manager Chris Armas and the Colorado Rapids."Â
Stewart-Baynes was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection. The Toronto native burst onto the scene in his first season in College Park, scoring three goals and notching a team leading seven assists. His 10 combined goals and assists is the most for a Maryland freshman since Eryk Williamson had six goals and five assists in 2015.Â
Stewart-Baynes is Maryland's second Big Ten Freshman of the Year following Joshua Bolma, who won the award in 2021. Patrick Mullins (2010) and Jeremy Hall (2006) won conference freshman of the year honors in the ACC.Â
