COLLEGE PARK, MD. - The University of Maryland softball team will begin its 2023 season this week in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico in the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. The Terps will take on five different opponents over four days of competition. The action kicks off on Feb. 9 when the Terps take on No. 23 Oregon at 9:30 p.m. ET. THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
series history
- Montgomery will face five different teams for the first time at the helm of the Maryland softball program.
- Oregon and Oklahoma State come in ranked at No. 22 and No. 3 in the first week of 2023 rankings.
- The Ducks and the Cowgirls both made the postseason in 2022. Oregon's season came to a close in the Fayetteville Regional where it fell to Arkansas twice. Oklahoma State advanced to the Women's College World Series where it was eliminated in the semifinals by Texas.

2022 season success
- Maryland wrapped up the 2022 season with a 29-23 record, its most wins since 2013.
- The Terps tallied 14 conference wins, their most since joining the Big Ten in 2015.
- With a fifth-place finish in the Big Ten, the Terps recorded their highest conference finish since joining the league. The Terps' season came to a close in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament.
- Maryland picked up two wins over ranked opponents in 2022, defeating No. 17 Missouri, 1-0 and No. 22 Michigan, 5-1.

- Maryland returns pitching aces Courtney Wyche and Trinity Schlotterbeck for their senior seasons. Wyche led the Terps in the circle last season finishing with an era of 1.95 across 136 innings pitched.
- All-Big Ten First Team selection Jaeda McFarland will return to the Terps for her junior season. McFarland was named to the Preseason Extra Innings Elite Players List coming in at No. 85. The Orange Park, Fla. native was Top-5 in several categories for the Terps last season including including batting average (.310), slugging % (.451), runs (30), hits (44), RBIs (23), doubles (8), triples (3), home runs (2), stolen bases (16) and total bases (64).
- All-Big Ten Second Team selection Megan Mikami returns for her third season in a Maryland uniform. Mikami placed her name in the top-five for average (.321), slugging % (.385), hits (50), RBIs (18), triples (1), total bases (60) and stolen bases (29-29) last season. Mikami's 29 stolen bases places her at the No. 1 spot in the conference, and No. 28 in the nation.

- Maryland welcomes seven newcomers to the 2023 squad.
- Sammi Woods and Madison Runyan look to make an immediate impact for the Terps in the middle infield positions. Gracelyn Solarz and Sydney Lewis will also look to contribute to the team's success in the infield.
- Nicole Bodeux, Keria Bucher, Genevieve Ebaugh all come to Maryland after strong prep career's on the mound. The trio of new Terps will be mixed in with an experienced pitching rotation led by Courtney Wyche and Trinity Schlotterbeck.
