COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland (8-7) completed a weekend series sweep of Maine (3-9) with a 9-1 win at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on Sunday. The win gave Maryland its first series sweep of the season and first series win at home.
Maryland completed its homestand a perfect 4-0 on Sunday despite going down early, with Maine striking first via a solo home run in the top of third inning. The Terps struck back in the bottom-half of the inning with a four-spot despite not recording a hit.
Maine starter Noah Lewis struggled with command, walking the bases loaded before hitting three consecutive batters with the bases loaded and walking in another. Ian Petrutz, Matt Woods and Eddie Hacopian all were hit, and Bobby Zmarzlak added on the RBI walk.
Zmarzlak added to this RBI total in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run, his first homer of the season for the Terps. He finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Teammates Kevin Keister and Woods also had two-RBI days for Maryland. Keister came through in the sixth with a two-run double and Woods joined in the home run party with his first in a Terps uniform, a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Maryland had a great bounce-back performance on the mound from Nate Haberthier, who came in after three one-run innings of work from freshman Kyle McCoy, to strike out eight in four scoreless innings of work, giving up two hits in the process. Terps pitching struck out 13 batters in the win while walking just one behind McCoy, Haberthier and David Falco Jr.
