No. 11 Maryland Opens Big Ten Action With 16-8 Win At No. 22 Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ – No. 11 Maryland won its fourth game in a row and its Big Ten opener with a 16-8 victory at No. 22 Rutgers on Saturday at SHI Stadium. The Terps are now 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

"Really happy with our shooting today," said head coach Cathy Reese. "We finished our shots, we did well on our eight meters, and really did well all across the board once we settled in defensively in the second quarter. From then on we did a really good job of defending their offense which is really dangerous. Good effort overall." 

Eloise Clevenger notched a career-high tying six points with three goals – for her first hat trick this season –  and three assists. It was her third game this season with at least three assists. 

After missing a pair of games, Hannah Leubecker made a triumphant return as she scored five goals, including the first four of the game for the Terps. Libby May tallied her fifth hat trick of the season and finished with four goals and has hat tricks in three of her last four games. 

Freshman sensation Kori Edmondson posted a hat trick for the fifth game in a row and finished with
three goals and one assist for four points. She has 19 points in her last five games. 

After the game was tied at 5-5 late in the first quarter, the Terps outscored Rutgers 11-3 over the final 47 minutes of the game. 

Shaylan Ahearn (seven) and Abby Bosco (six) were dominant on draw controls as the Terps won 19 in the game to Rutgers' eight. 

In the goal, Emily Sterling made nine saves and held Rutgers to just three goals over the final three quarters. 

Rutgers (4-4, 0-2 Big Ten) was led by Marin Hartshorn, who tallied five goals and an assist for six points. 

Breaking Down The Action

  • Leubecker returned to action and opened the scored the Terps' first four goals – all in the game's first 5:13 of action as Maryland led 4-2. Kori Edmondson added the fifth tally. After Rutgers tied the game at 5-5. Shaylan Ahern and Libby May scored to close out the quarter and give the Terps the lead at 7-5 after the first. 
  • The goalies and defense took over in the second quarter as after 12 goals were scored in the opening quarter, neither team found the back of the net under May scored on a free position shot with 4:31 left in the half for an 8-5 Maryland edge. The teams traded goals in the final 17 seconds as Hartshorn scored her fifth of the game and Leubecker responded from the sharp angle with her fifth of the game with two seconds left in the half for a 9-6 Terps' lead at intermission.
  • Maryland opened the second half with goal by May, Edmondson and Clevenger to take a 12-6 lead less than five minutes into the quarter. Edmondson added her second of the quarter, in transition, for a 13-7 Terp edge. Clevenger's goal with 1:20 left in the quarter gave Maryland a 14-8 lead after three. 
  • May and Clevenger scored in the fourth as Maryland blanked the Scarlet Knights over the final 15 minutes. 


Moving Up The Career Charts
  • Aheran is still fifth in career draw controls with seven in the game, giving her 251 in her career. She is closing in on Karri Ellen Johnson, who had 254 from 2008-12. 
  • Next on the list is Lizzie Colson, who had 324 from 2017-21.
  • The all-time time draw controls record is held by Taylor Cummings, who had 509 from 2013-16. 
  • Emily Sterling moved to eighth in career saves with nine in the game. She now has 386  in her career as she passed Alison Buote, who had 380 from 2005-08. 
  • Next up is Alexis Venechanos, who had 446 from 2000-03. 
  • The all-time saves record is held by Alex Kahoe, who had 968 from 1997-2000. 

Multi-Terps Update
  • May (four goals) had her eighth multi-point game, seventh multi-goal game, and fifth hat trick in 10 games this season. In her career, she now has 41 multi-point games, 37 multi-goal games and 23 hat tricks in 54 career games. 
  • Leubecker (five goals) had her seventh multi-point game, sixth multi-goal game, and third hat trick this season – in eight games. In her career, she now has 39 multi-point games, 37 multi-goal games and 25 hat tricks, all in 52 career games. 
  • In her freshman season, Edmondson (three goals and one assist) has recorded multiple points in each of her last five games with multiple goals (three in the precvous four) and hat tricks in the previous four games. 
  • Clevenger (three goals and three assists) now has seven multi-point, six multi-assist and two multi-goal games this season in 10 games. In her career, she has 24 multi-point, 16 multi-assist and 14 multi-goal games.
