COLUMBUS, OH – Timely hitting, pitching and defense helped Maryland (21-13, 6-2 Big Ten) capture Game 2 of its series at Ohio State (17-17, 2-9 Big Ten) with a 3-2 victory at Bill Davis Stadium on Saturday. With the win, the Terps have now won 18 consecutive Big Ten conference series dating back to the 2021 season.
With two outs in the top of the eighth,
Ian Petrutz and
Eddie Hacopian each recorded an RBI knock to break the 1-1 tie, proving to be the decisive blow in Maryland's sixth consecutive series win of 2023.
The Buckeyes manufactured several scoring chances, but
Nick Dean,
Kenny Lippman and
David Falco Jr. dug deep on the mound to limit Ohio State to just two runs while leaving 10 Buckeyes on the basepaths. Dean held the Big Ten foe to one run while striking out five in 5.1 innings of work, while Lippman earned his second win while hurling 2.1 innings of one-run ball. Falco Jr. closed out his fifth save of the campaign by pitching 1.1 perfect innings.
In the first, Dean worked out of a jam with runners on the corners, striking out Marcus Ernst to end the threat. Two frames later, he worked around a leadoff double from Trey Lipsey, retiring the top of the order to strand the Buckeye at third. The 2022 Third Team All-Big Ten selection worked out of an even more dangerous situation in the bottom of the fourth, as Ohio State loaded the bases with nobody out. Dean induced an infield pop up to get the first out, then punched out Lipsey and Josh McAlister to preserve the shutout.
Zach Martin continued his hot streak to give the Terps some run support, taking Jonah Jenkins deep to right for a solo home run to put Maryland on the scoreboard first in the fifth inning.
Ohio State knotted the game up at one apiece in the bottom of the sixth, as a bases-loaded walk set the Buckeyes up to take the lead. However, Lippman entered the game with the bases-loaded, one-out predicament and prevented further damage by getting the next two batters out to keep it a tie ballgame.
The Terps kept the score tied with timely defense in the seventh inning, as
Jacob Orr,
Matt Shaw and Shliger teamed up on a perfect relay to cut down Tyler Pettorini at the plate to not allow Ohio State to take its first lead.
After Maryland took the 3-1 advantage thanks to Petrutz and Hacopian, Ohio State got a run back on a solo home run, but Falco Jr. locked down the game by retiring the next four hitters to secure the one-run victory for the Terps.
At the plate, eight Terps recorded a hit, as Martin launched his second home run of the season and
Luke Shliger extended his lengthy reached-base streak to 32 games, going 1-for-2 with a double and two walks.
