WASHINGTON D.C. – On the back of
Matt Shaw's record-breaking home run, Maryland baseball (27-15) mashed a season-best seven dingers to power its way to a 16-3 run-rule victory over Georgetown (23-19) in the rubber match of the season series Wednesday night at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
During a six-run outburst in the third inning, Shaw hit the 44th home run of his collegiate career to break Paul Schager's Maryland program record for most career home runs. His blast was part of an offensive onslaught that saw the Terps record the most home runs by the team since reaching that total in a 2021 NCAA Regional matchup against Norfolk State.
Other stalwarts at the dish included
Kevin Keister, who had his second consecutive multi-homer outing, opening the scoring with a solo shot in the third inning and launching the team's ninth grand slam of 2023 as a part of a nine-run sixth frame. He finished the game 2-for-3 with five RBI, tying his season high set Tuesday night against UMBC.
In addition to Shaw's two-run home run in the third, the Terps mashed three more home runs in the frame, as Keister led off the frame with a solo home run while
Matt Woods and
Elijah Lambros hit back-to-back blasts to build the early advantage in Maryland's fourth consecutive victory.
Three innings later, the Terps hit a trio of homers to effectively seal the contest.
Jacob Orr led off the inning with a solo round-tripper before
Luke Shliger hit a home run in his second consecutive outing to put two more runs on the board.
All nine Maryland starters reached base, as Shliger extended his mammoth reached-base streak to 40 games with a hit by pitch in the second. Shaw also continued his 33-game reached-base run with the third-inning home run.
Ryan Van Buren (1-3) had a career-best performance to start for the Terps in his first win of 2023, as the Abington, PA native threw a career-high 4.0 innings and tied a career-high four strikeouts. He held the Georgetown bats at bay, allowing just two earned runs and working out of a fourth-inning jam to close his outing.
The bullpen held strong behind him as
Tommy Kane and
Andrew Johnson allowed just a single run in three innings of work while combining to strike out four Hoyas.
