Terps Dominate Hoosiers In Series Opener, 13-2

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland (28-15, 9-4 B1G) took care of business in a big way to begin its weekend series against Indiana (31-12, 9-4 B1G) with a 13-2 win, taking over first place in the conference.

The Maryland offense did its thing, getting the Terps out to an early lead and expanding that lead in the middle innings, but Nick Dean, who slotted in as the Friday starter to begin the Indiana series, had a career day on the mound.

Dean struck out a career-high 10 Hoosiers over seven innings, giving up two solo home runs and five hits overall. After some shaky outings to begin his season, Dean got the shut-down start he was looking for.

Maryland got things started with a bang in the top of the first inning as Matt Shaw and Nick Lorusso hit back-to-back solo homers as the Terps took a 2-0 lead. It was the fourth time this season that the duo went back-to-back as they continue to pace the team in homers, currently tied with 16 each.

Lorusso's homer gave him a new single-season career high in college and an additional RBI gave him 67 on the season, which continues to lead the Big Ten and puts him in a tie with Texas Tech's Gavin Kash and LSU's Tommy White for second in the country. It also puts him in a tie with Shaw for fifth-most single-season RBI in team history.

Both Shaw and Lorusso had three-hit games in the win, the sixth time this season for both players. A two-run double in the ninth for Shaw gave him three RBI on the day, his seventh three-RBI game of the season. He now has 48 RBI on the season, creeping his way up the all-time RBI leaderboard in Maryland history as he now sits in a tie for third place with Maxwell Costes and Mike Murphy with 145 RBI.

As has been the case this week, the Terps benefited from the big inning once again, a seven-run fifth inning that saw Bobby Zmarzlak drive two in off a single and Kevin Keister double home another run.

Ian Petrutz and Luke Shliger both had an RBI sacrifice fly in that frame, as Maryland's lead ballooned from 3-1 to 10-1 at that point, adding on another run in the seventh off a wild pitch for good measure.

Rob Vaughn's Take

"Nick Dean was absolutely outstanding, he looked fresh, he felt good and he was executing pitches. He [Dean] is the story of the game, as good as the offense was, Nick was absolutely elite tonight."

"I thought it was our best game of the year by far. The offense really set the tone in the top half, the back-to-back homers early and it didn't stop there which was that was the big thing."
