BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland (29-15, 10-4 B1G) secured yet another series win in conference play, dominating Indiana (31-13, 9-5 B1G) with a 16-2 win on Saturday in Bloomington.
That win meant that the Terps have now gone 20 straight Big Ten series without a loss, 19 straight series wins and a series split. Maryland now sits alone atop the Big Ten standings after Saturday's win.
Freshman starter Kyle McCoy rebounded and had a spectacular start for Maryland on Saturday, working quickly and allowing one earned run in seven innings of work, giving up five hits and allowing eight baserunners in total.
Maryland scored its runs in bunches on Saturday, scoring a run in each of the first two innings before a pair of two-run innings in the fourth and sixth, respectively. The home run has aided the Terps in a big way so far this season, and Saturday was no different, blasting four homers in total, including two two-run blasts and a grand slam. Maryland now has hit 96 homers this season, surpassing South Carolina for second in the nation, trailing only Florida Gulf Coast.
Matt Shaw, having broken the career home run record for Maryland earlier in the week, hit his second homer in as many days and third homer in as many games with a two-run shot in the top of the sixth inning. He now leads the Terps with 17 home runs this season, reaching the 50 RBI plateau for the second-straight season.
Shaw now has 147 career RBI as a Terp, moving him into a tie with Will Frazier for second all-time in Maryland history. It was also his seventh three-hit game of the season.
Luke Shliger continued his hot hitting for the Terps with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, his fourth home run in five games as he now has 11 on the season. Shliger scored four runs on Saturday, currently leading the country with 70 runs scored this season. He currently has 166 runs scored in his Maryland career, two runs away from tying Chris Alleyne for second all-time in program history.
The eighth inning was the crown jewel for the Terps on Saturday as Maryland scored nine runs, sending nine-straight hitters to the plate without recording an out. Matt Woods hit Maryland's 10th grand slam of the season, becoming the ninth hitter to hit a grand slam this season for the Terps.
Ian Petrutz didn't want to be left out of the run-scoring brigade, hitting a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning, Maryland's fourth of the game, which meant that every player in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run.
Rob Vaughn's Take
"Just a really complete performance in all facets, I thought our starting pitching the last two days was absolutely elite. I thought [Nick] Dean was unbelievable, [Kyle] McCoy outstanding today and just super relentless offensively. "
"Nine spots aren't easy in this league, those guys are hanging nine runs off guys coming out of the bullpen throwing 92 to 95, just a really relentless approach. We hit some home runs, we competed with two strikes...just a complete effort all-around."
