BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland (30-15, 11-4 B1G) did something no team has done since Minnesota in 2011, sweeping Indiana (31-14, 9-6 B1G) in Bloomington after a 14-8 win on Sunday, the 21st consecutive Big Ten series without a loss for the Terps (20 series win, one series split) since the 2021 season. Maryland sits alone in first place in the Big Ten following this weekend.
Sunday's win extended Maryland's current winning streak to seven straight games, the longest of the season, as the Terps have won nine of their last 10 games overall. It's the first time Maryland has won six-straight games while scoring 10+ runs in ever game since the 1999 season. It's Maryland's first sweep of a conference opponent on the road since sweeping Rutgers in April 2017.
The win also marks 30 wins for Maryland this season, the third straight season that the Terps have achieved that mark and the ninth time in the last 11 full (non-COVID) seasons that Maryland has reached 30 wins in a season.
It was the Elijah Lambros game for the Terps as he went 4-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored. Lambros now has 13 home runs and 39 RBI for Maryland this season, one of five Maryland players with 10+ home runs and just one RBI away from 40 on the season. He hit two of Maryland's three home runs on the day, the other coming from Matt Shaw, who now has a team-leading 18 home runs this season for Maryland. Lambros recorded career-highs in hits and runs scored. It was also his third multi-homer game of the season.
Maryland jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Sunday after a pair of two-run innings in the second and third innings, respectively. Ian Petrutz and Eddie Hacopian helped double the Terps' lead with a pair of RBI singles, something they capitalized on a lot in the series finale. Of Maryland's 14 runs scored, seven scored off RBI singles.
Indiana kept things close, even taking the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning at 7-6, much of that due to the bat of Devin Taylor. Taylor hit two homers for the Hoosiers in the first half of the game, a three-run homer in the bottom of the third inning to make it a 4-3 game and a two-run shot in the fifth to tie the score at 6-6.
Maryland failed to score in the first inning, but scored in every other inning from the second inning on, scoring multiple runs in five innings in Sunday's win. All told, the Terps recorded 18 hits, and most importantly, they kept the Hoosiers off the board once starter
Jason Savacool departed after five innings of work.
The Maryland bullpen allowed just one run in the final four innings of the game, with
Kenny Lippman throwing a hitless inning out of the pen and
David Falco Jr. earning his seventh save of the season, allowing one run and three hits in three innings of relief.
Rob Vaughn's Take
"Proud of the guys for finishing, we've set that up three times this year and it's the first time we've been able to finish the weekend."
"The bottom of the lineup is really getting going and when that happens this lineup gets really scary. Everyone knows [Matt] Shaw at the top, [Luke] Shliger, [Nick] Lorusso those guys have been doing that for years but when some of those guys at the bottom get going it just lengthens your lineup."
