COLLEGE PARK, Md. --Â The No. 10 Terps had to overcome a fourth-quarter deficit against in-state foe Johns Hopkins, but pulled away late thanks to key goals by Libby May, Shaylan Ahearn and Kori Edmondson and came out on top, 13-12.
"I'm really proud of our team today," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "That was a win we really gutted out. We had a strong first half and then not a great third quarter, they outplayed us. Proud of how we gutted it out. Shay (Ahearn) was huge on the draw and Chrissy (Thomas) was excellent in controlling the ball behind on the offensive end. Proud of how we finished strong. They had all the momentum for a while and we found some answers. This is a real game of growth for our team."Â
The Blue Jays had a run where they scored seven of eight goals put on the board, but the Terps showed their resiliency in the fourth to secure their eighth consecutive victory of the season. Maryland is now 11-3 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten games while Johns Hopkins fell to 5-7 on the year and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Â
Chrissy Thomas led the way offensively with five points on a goal and four assists. May, Ahearn and Edmondson each recorded hat tricks while Victoria Hensh notched a pair of goals. Shannon Smith also scored to round out the offense.
Defensively, Brianna Lamoureux scooped four groundballs and caused two turnovers. Abby Bosco caused three turnovers and had two groundballs. She also won four draw controls.Â
