Terps Drop 7-1 Game To Iowa In B1G Tournament

URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, IL – Eighth-seeded Maryland suffered a 7-1 defeat to ninth-seeded Iowa in the First Round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Terps stand at 36-17 overall in hopes of playing in the postseason. 

With both teams scoreless going into the fourth inning, the Hawkeyes scored in the fourth before Maryland tied it up in the fifth inning. A successful top of the sixth put Iowa back in the lead, which they extended in the seventh inning. Despite putting multiple runners on in the bottom of the sixth, the Hawkeyes defense turned it up late-game to hold off the Terps offense. 

Michaela Jones achieved Maryland's run in this game, with Kiley Goff recording the RBI. Megan Mikami contributed well in the leadoff spot, finishing 2-2 with a hit, walk, and stolen base. 

Maryland rotated pitchers in the circle all evening as Trinity Schlotterbeck started and threw 3.1 innings with two strikeouts and only three hits allowed. Courtney Wyche pitched 3.1 innings and spun three strikeouts Keira Bucher tossed the remaining two outs in the game for the Terps.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Schlotterbeck and Wyche tag-teamed to deliver a one-two-three top of the first inning against the Hawkeyes offense. 
  • A Mikami single and Goff HBP put two runners on early, but the Terps couldn't convert for a score in the first inning. 
  • Iowa scored in the fourth inning off of a sacrifice fly. 
  • The Terps loaded the bases with no outs in the fifth thanks to a Michaela Jones single and a pair of perfectly placed bunts by Sammi Woods and Wyche. Goff reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Jones to touch home for a score. 
  • The Hawkeyes added two runs in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly out and an RBI double. With a runner on second, Jaeda McFarland secured a grab in deep center field for the final out of the stanza. 
  • Iowa upped the score to 7-1 in the seventh off an RBI walk and three RBI hits.

  • 25: Number of swiped bags by leadoff batter Mikami this season. 
  • 107: Stolen bases by Mikami and Mackense Greico brings the Terps to X+GAME total swiped bags, which leads the Big Ten and is among the best in the country.
  • 179: Wyche notched three Ks in this game, upping her season total to 179, a Top-30 mark in the country.
