No. 19 Terps Drop Series Opener To Minnesota, 10-7

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 19 Terps came up short in the series opener against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, falling 10-7.

After falling behind 6-2, Maryland went back on top thanks to a massive five-run fourth inning keyed by homers from Kevin Keister and Matt Shaw. However, the Terps could not bring anyone else across the plate in the final five innings and the Golden Gophers scored four more to claim the 10-7 victory.

Shaw finished with two RBIs that came off his homer in the fourth as well as a double. Keister had three RBIs from his homer and added a ninth-inning single.

Star third baseman Nick Lorusso also homered on the night–-a two-run jack in the bottom of the first. All seven of the Terps' runs came via the long ball.

Nick Dean started on the mound for Maryland and threw four innings. Nigel Belgrave and David Falco Jr. were stellar out of the pen, giving up just one run in a combined 4.1 innings.

Breaking Down The Action
  • A Nick Lorusso bomb in the bottom of the first inning (his 34th homer of the season) brought home Matt Shaw and gave the Terps an early 2-0 lead.
  • Minnesota scored the next six runs.
  • The Terps got back within one run on a Kevin Keister three-run shot in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Shaw put Maryland back ahead in the same inning, following up Keister's homer with a two-run blast of his own.
  • The Golden Gophers hit two home-runs in the top of the fifth for three runs and a 10-7 lead.
  • Minnesota tacked on one more in eighth as the Terps could not plate anyone for the remainder of the game.
