No. 11 Terps Advance To Second Round Of NCAA Tournament, Top Drexel 11-6

HARRISONBURG, VA -- No. 11 Maryland (15-6) came out of the gates firing en route to a 6-2 first-quarter lead and ultimately took care of business in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, earning an 11-6 win over Drexel (12-6). With the win, the Terps advance to the NCAA Second Round where they will face seventh-seeded James Madison on Sunday at 1 pm. 

"Want to start off by congratulating Drexel on a fantastic season," said head coach Cathy Reese. "I'm proud of my team for finding a way to advance. It wasn't easy. There were a lot of battles on the field, some of which we won and some Drexel won. But we stuck with it and did a good job of handling whatever was thrown our way." 

Libby May, Chrissy ThomasKate Sites and Hannah Leubecker each scored a pair of goals to lead the offense while Eloise Clevenger, Shannon Smith and Abby Bosco (first of the season) all notched goals. Thomas also added two assists. 

Bosco was everywhere tonight, finishing with the goal, five caused turnovers, three draw controls and three groundballs. Emily Sterling made nine saves on the night, including seven in the first half. 

The defense as a whole was stout all night. Through 51:38 of game action, Drexel only mustered three goals. 

The Terps remain undefeated in the First Round under Reese, having won eight straight dating back to 2007 (not including the program's eight byes). 

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps scored five of the game's first six goals, with Leubecker putting home the first two for the Terps. Maryland led 6-2 at the end of the first quarter. 
  • Libby May and Katie Sites each scored in the second quarter to give the Terps a 8-2 halftime lead. Sterling made seven saves in the first half. 
  • Abby Bosco scored her first goal of the season in the third quarter as the Terps carried a dominant 10-3 lead into the fourth. 

Tourney Time 
  • Maryland is playing in the 2023 NCAA Tournament having won four of the last eight National Championships, last winning in 2019.
  • The Terps lead the nation with 38 NCAA appearances and are also tops in wins (79), championship game appearances (22) and NCAA titles (14). The Terps are making their 33rd consecutive appearance in the postseason (1990-2023).
  • The Terps have made 12 of the past 13 Final Fours dating back to 2009.
  • Under Cathy Reese, Maryland has five National Championships (2010, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2019). Reese is now 40-10 at Maryland in the NCAA Tournament, making 12 Final Fours and eight championship games.
  • Maryland has won eight straight first round games dating back to 2007 (have had a bye eight times) and have never lost one under Reese.

Terps On The Charts
  • Ahearn held steady with 313 career draw controls. Next on the list is No. 3 Lizzie Colson, who had 324 from 2017-21. The all-time time draw controls record is held by Taylor Cummings, who had 509 from 2013-16. 
  • Sterling moved into sixth in career saves with nine in the game. She now has 492, passing Brittany Dipper, who had 490 from 2009-12. Next up is Denise Wescott (519, 1978-80). The all-time saves record is held by Alex Kahoe, who had 968 from 1997-2000.  

Multi-Terps Update
  • May (two goals, one assist) recorded her 17th multi-point game and 16th multi-goal game, in 21 games this season. In her career, she now has 50 multi-point games and 46 multi-goal games in 65 career games. 
  • Leubecker (two goals) posted her 12th multi-point and 11th multi-goal game this season in 18 games. In her career, she now has 44 multi-point games and 42 multi-goal games in 62 career games.
  • Thomas (two goals, two assists) had her 11th multi-point and sixth multi-goal game this season – the only such games in her career. 
  • Clevenger (one goal, one assist) had her 15th multi-point game. In her career, she now has 32 multi-point games. 
  • Sites (two goals) had her second multi-goal of the season and fourth multi-goal game of her career.

  • 1: Standout defender Abby Bosco scored her first goal of the season.
