Lorusso & Shaw Set Maryland Career RBI Record As No. 19 Terps Ground Gophers, 14-5

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Both Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw set the Maryland career record for RBIs as the Terrapins beat Minnesota, 14-5, on Saturday in a rain-delayed game at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. The Terps are now 34-18 and 14-6 in the Big Ten. Maryland is tied with Indiana at the top of the Big Ten standings with both teams at 14-6, with the Terps holding the tiebreaker, winning all three games against the Hoosiers this season. 

Lorusso first became Maryland's all-time leader RBIs with a run-scoring double in the third inning, scoring Matt Shaw for his 157 career RBI, breaking the record previously held by Scott Patterson (1985-88), who had 156. Shaw equaled the mark with his 157th RBI on a three-run homer in the fourth inning. 
  That was one of three homers in the game for the Terps as Matt Woods also clubbed two bombs and drove in a season-high five RBIs. For Woods, who went 2-for-3, it was his second multi-homer game of the season.
  More records fell on Saturday as Luke Shliger scored two runs to break his own school record for runs scored in a single season with 81. He scored a record 79 last year. He is now second all-time in career runs scored with 177, behind assistant coach Matt Swope, who had 181 from 1999-2002. 

Elijah Lambros went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in. Kevin Keister went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Eddie Hacopian scored three runs and drove in two in the win, 

Jason Savacool tossed six innings allowing seven hits and one earned run with six strikeouts before giving way to Andrew Johnson

Caleb Estes made his Maryland debut on the mound, finishing the game for the Terps.

Minnesota is now 15-32 and 8-12 in the Big Ten. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland took a 1-0 lead as Hacopian singled through the right side to bring home Lorusso in the bottom first inning. 
  • In the third inning, the Terps expanded the lead to 2-0 on a Lorusso doubling home Shaw. Lambros singled to center scoring Hacopian and Petrutz to push the lead to 4-0. 
  • Ike Mezzenga got Minnesota on the board with a solo homer in the top of the fourth.
  • Shaw smashed a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring Shliger and Keister, making at 7-1. Woods homered a few batters later to bring in Hacopian for a 9-1 lead for the Terps. 
  • The Terps added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning keyed by Woods' three-run home run to build a 14-1 lead. 
  • Minnesota scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning cutting the Maryland advantage to 14-3.
  • The Gophers tacked on another run in the eighth to make it 14-4. 
  • Minnesota tallied one run in the top of the ninth inning, making it 14-5.
