 THIS WEEK'S STORYLINES
The Matchup
  • No. 1 seeded Maryland baseball continues postseason play by facing No. 4 seeded Nebraska on Thursday, May 25 at 6:00 pm CT.  Every game of the Big Ten Tournament will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Baseball Network.
  • Maryland meets Nebraska for the 17th time overall and second time in the Big Ten Tournament. The Terps have not faced the Cornhuskers in the postseason since 2017 with Maryland claiming an 8-5 victory in Omaha, Nebraska.
  • Nebraska (32-21) come into the matchup fresh off a thrilling 9-7 victory over Rutgers in its opening game of the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans have a winning record at neutral sites in 2023, holding a 6-2 record.
  • Junior infielder and Golden Spikes award semifinalist Max Anderson is the catalyst offensively for the Cornhuskers. Anderson leads the team in hits (93), home runs (21), RBI (69) and batting average (.412).

Week by Week
  • The Terps opened the Big Ten Tournament with a 3-2 victory over No. 8 seeded Michigan State. Maryland turned a Big Ten Tournament record five double plays in the game and received clutch at-bats in the bottom of the eighth to stay in the all-important winners bracket.\
  • Maryland earned it's second consecutive Big Ten Championship and 22nd straight conference series victory after winning two-of-three games over Penn State in the final series of the regular season. The Terps became the first Big Ten team to win back-to-back Big Ten titles since Indiana in 2013-14.
  • Maryland took two-of-three games against Minnesota. The Terps dropped the Friday night matchup but clinched the series victory after outscoring the Golden Gophers 29-14 over the weekend's final two games.
  • The Terps claimed two-of-three games against Nebraska in College Park. The series culminated with a 20-5 Sunday victory over the Cornhuskers that clinched the series and saw Nick Lorusso break the single-season RBI record with his 84th RBI of the season.
  • Maryland traveled to Bloomington, Indiana sweeping the Hoosiers in three dominant victories. The Terps outscored Indiana 43 to 12, amassing nine home runs and 50 hits across the three-game series.
  • Maryland, claimed two-of-three against Purdue in College Park. Eddie Hacopian earned Big Ten Player of the Week after leading the team with six hits, two home runs, and five RBI in the series.
  • The Terps won their 18th consecutive conference series dating back to 2021, taking two-of-three over Ohio State in Columbus. Pitching led the way for the Terps as Jason Savacool and Nick Dean remained staunch on the hill and Dave Falco earned two saves in consecutive appearances on Friday and Saturday.
  • Maryland claimed it's fifth consecutive series win after taking two-of-three games over Rutgers in their Big Ten home opener. The Terps used quality outings from starters Jason Savacool and Nick Dean to edge out two tight victories on Friday (6-4) and Saturday (4-3).
  • The Terps began conference play by taking two-of-three against No. 22 Iowa at Duane Banks Field. The series was highlighted by a back-and-forth battle on Friday that saw the Terps come back from a five-run deficit and Matt Shaw hit a 507 ft grand slam to re-claim the Terp lead.
  • Maryland took two-of-three against UCF in Orlando, Fla for their final non-conference series of the year. The Terps dropped the Friday night matchup but scored 24 runs over the next two games and took the series with an 8-6 victory on Sunday. 
  • The Terps claimed two-of-three against UAlbany at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Nick Lorusso was a consistent force for the Terps at the plate, batting .455 with three doubles and five RBI over the weekend.
  • Maryland claimed its first series sweep of the 2023 campaign, taking all three games against Maine. The series was highlighted by a 25-run explosion on Friday night that included back-to-back home runs from Nick Lorusso and Matt Shaw in both the first and third inning.
  • Maryland claimed an 8-3 victory over Delaware in a midweek matchup. Ian Petrutz came away with his fifth home run in his first eight games while Elijah Lambros smashed a two-run blast for his third home run as a Terp. 
  • Maryland traveled to Oxford, Mississippi taking 1-of-3 against the then No. 4 Ole Miss Rebels in a weekend series. Ian Petrutz and Jason Savacool led the Terps to a Friday night victory as Petrutz went 3-for-4 with his second grand slam of the season, two runs scored and four RBI. Savacool was dynamite on the mound striking out nine Ole Miss hitters in seven innings of work, giving up just one earned run and two runs overall.
  • The Terps opened 2023 with a series victory over South Florida in Tampa. The weekend was highlighted by three consecutive games with a grand slam for Maryland.

Season Highlights
  • Maryland claimed its second-consecutive Big Ten title, Terps becoming the first Big Ten team to win back-to-back Big Ten titles since Indiana in 2013-14.
  • Matt Shaw broke the Terps all-time home run record, hitting his 44th bases-clearing blast against Georgetown on Wednesday Apri,l 26th at National Youth Academy. The record was previously held by Paul Schager who hit 43 at Maryland from 1984 to 1987.
  • Shliger has continued where he left off leading the Terps in OBP (.522), runs (88), and walks (61) while sitting fourth in hits (73).
    The Danbury, Connecticut native currently leads the nation in runs, passing Dylan Crews from LSU. 
  • Senior Nick Lorusso is on pace for one of the best individual season in Maryland baseball history as he leads the team in hits (90), RBI (97), and batting average (.375). 
  • On Sunday, May 7, Lorusso secured the Maryland single-season program RBI record, hitting a grand slam to record his 84th of the season and pass Derek Hacopian's previous mark of 83.
  • With his six RBI across the Terps' final three games, Lorusso passed Indiana's Mike Smith (1992) for the Big Ten the single-season RBI record. 
  • Lorusso's 96 RBI are the most for any Division I college baseball player since 2003 when Billy Becher tallied 118 for New Mexico State.
  • The Terps have continued to be one of the best teams in the country when it comes to bases-clearing blasts, leading the Big Ten and sitting second nationally with 119 home runs.

Popular in the preseason
  • Maryland entered the 2023 season as a consensus top-25 program and the No. 13 team in the country according to D1Baseball.
  • Three Terps, Jason Savacool, Matt Shaw and Luke Shliger each earned preseason All-American honors. The trio received recognition from D1Baseball, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball News. Shaw was also named a preseason All-American by Baseball America.
  • Juniors Luke Shliger (No. 1), Matt Shaw (No. 3) and Jason Savacool (No. 10) were each ranked in the Top-10 for their position by D1Baseball heading into the 2023 campaign.
  • Maryland comes into 2023 fresh off winning its first-ever Big Ten Championship in 2022 and its first conference title in more than a half-century since the Terps won the ACC in 1971. Overall, it was Maryland's fifth conference crown.
  • The Terps return 15 players from last year's squad including six All-Big Ten honorees (Jason Savacool, Nick Lorusso, Matt ShawKevin KeisterLuke Shliger, and Nick Dean).
  • Maryland welcomes incoming transfers Matt Woods (Bryant), Elijah Lambros (South Carolina), Tommy Kane (Rowan), Eddie Hacopian (Cypress College) and Nate Haberthier (Ohio State), who have all made an immediate impact in College Park this season.

Meet the Coaches
  • Sixth-year Head Coach Rob Vaughn returns as skipper after last season's Big Ten Championship and receiving conference Coach of the Year honors. Vaughn is a career 179-115 (.606) as the Head Coach of the Terps.
  • Matt Swope and Anthony Papio return to the bench this year for Maryland, they bring a wealth of experience to the dugout as both Terrapin baseball alumni and veteran coaches on staff.
  • Mike Morrison returns as assistant for his second season with the Terps. Morrison joined the staff from Coastal Carolina, where won a national championship as a player in 2016 and spent two years as Director of Player Development and Scouting of the Chanticleers, as well as interim pitching coach.
  • Former Maryland baseball player Tommy Gardiner is back with the staff and serves as Director of Player Development after spending four seasons playing under Vaughn, Swope, and Papio.
