COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 23 Maryland (32-16, 12-5 B1G) fell to Nebraska (25-18-1, 10-7 B1G) in a 12-10 slugfest at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium in College Park on Saturday afternoon. The loss snapped a season-high nine-game winning streak for the Terps, who were looking to tie their longest winning streak since 2015 at 10 games.
Saturday was a home run derby for both teams from the start, with both teams hitting four each through the first five innings of the game. Griffin Everitt made a loud entrance in the top of the first inning with a grand slam for Nebraska.
Maryland, down 5-0 after the first, got two-back in the bottom-half of the inning after a two-run homer from Matt Shaw. Shaw hit his 20th of the season in the bottom of the second as he and Kevin Keister each hit solo home runs in the inning.
Shaw became the first player in program history with two 20-homer seasons as a Terp, recording just the fourth 20-homer season in franchise history, three of which have happened since 2022. He had a three-hit afternoon, the eighth time he's done that this season, and with three runs scored, it's the eighth-straight game he's scored more than two runs.
Adding on to his historic career, Shaw drove in three RBI on the day, the eighth time he's done that this season. He now has 151 career RBI, six away from breaking Scott Patterson's program record of 156 RBI.
Maryland cut the lead to 9-7 in the bottom of the fifth after Nebraska answered with two home runs in the top of the inning. Nick Lorusso continued his impressive season with a three-run homer, his 18th of the year. It gave him 76 RBI this season, which now leads the country.
Luke Shliger, who continues to be one of the more prolific run scorers in program history, scored three runs on Saturday, the 11th time he's scored three or more runs this season. He now has 76 runs scored overall which now leads the nation.
