No. 33 Maryland Set For NCAA Regionals in Georgia

ATHENS, GA - This week, the No. 6 - seed Maryland women's golf team will return to postseason play in Athens, Ga. to compete in the NCAA Regionals at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Terrapins are competing for a chance to play at the NCAA Division I Women's National Championship at Greyhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz. The tournament will consist of 54 holes of play (18 holes Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday), with all rounds beginning at 8:00 am. Players will tee off in a tee-time format from holes 1 and 10. The field will play from 6,347 yards. Fans can follow the live scoring here.
The tournament format will consist of a "play five, count four" format.
No. 28th-ranked junior Patricie Mackova, sophomore Panassaya Somchit, senior Maria Vittoria Corbi, senior Angela Garvin, and freshman Nicha Kanpai, ranked 86th nationally, will tee it up this week for the Terrapins.
"We have had a great week of practice, and everyone is really excited to get to Athens and give it our best effort," said head coach Kelly Hovland.
This selection sends the Terps to NCAA Regionals as a team for the first time under Kelly Hovland's tenure as head coach and sixth all-time as a program. Patricie Mackova will play in the regional event for the second season in a row after earning an individual bid to the Albuquerque Regional just a year ago, where she finished in a tie for 25th at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
Maryland enters this weekend as the 33th-ranked team in the nation.
Participants in the Regional include South Carolina is the top seed in the Athens Regional, followed by No. 2 San Jose State, No. 3 Ole Miss, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Georgia, No. 7 Kent State, No. 8 Charleston, No. 9 Kansas, No. 10 Furman, No. 11 Augusta, No. 12 Sacred Heart as well as several individual selections.
Rankings are based on team standings via Golfstat as of May 1, 2023.
Over the three-day tournament (May 8-10), Maryland will play the par-72 layout designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., and renovated in 2006 by Love Golf Design (major champion Davis Love III and his brother Mark). The course has hosted the 1983, 1993, and 2013 NCAA Championships. The 2023 NCAA Regional will be the third contest on the UGA layout in the last 16 seasons, following those in 2008 and 2017.
