Garvin Continues To Lead Maryland in Second Round of NCAA Regionals

ATHENS, GA -- Senior Angela Garvin of the 33rd-ranked Maryland women's golf team continues to lead the Terrapins in Tuesday's second round of NCAA Regionals at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

Garvin led the sixth-seeded Terrapins with an even score of 72, remaining at one under par overall for the tournament after posting a one-under 71 on Monday. She is in a three-way tie for 6th in the individual standings, made three bogeys, and bounced back with birdies on the sixth, 11th, and 18th holes to post an even-par round.

As a team, the Terps remain in fourth in the Regional, scoring 294 (+6) after improving one shot from the opening 18 yesterday. The Terrapins racked up 14 birdies to continue to lead the field, with 31 total made this week.

The tournament will consist of 18 more holes of play on Wednesday, with the final round beginning at 8:00 am. Players will tee off in a tee-time format from holes 1 and 10. The field will play from 6,347 yards at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Fans can follow the live scoring here.

THE TEAM

Freshman Nicha Kanpai sits in a five-way tie for 23rd moving up one position on the leaderboard, posting 74 (+2); she posted the same score yesterday, moving to four strokes over par overall in her first NCAA Regionals appearance.

Junior Patricie Mackova, ranked No. 28 nationally, earned a score of 73 (+1), making four birdies throughout the round to move up 11 spots on the leaderboard. She is currently in a four-way tie for 28th at five over par.

Senior Maria Vittoria Corbi posted a score of 76 (+4), making her two birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Corbi sits in a five-way tie for 32nd, at six over par.

Sophomore Panassaya Somchit shot a 75 (+3) on the day to move up six spots in a four-way tie for 53rd, which is 12 over par. Somchit made an eagle of the par-5 477-yard 17th (one of five this week in the field),  and a birdie to close out the day on the 18th.

HOVLAND'S ANALYSIS
"Finishing with four birdies on the last hole was an exciting way to end the day. We were resilient throughout the second round, and we need the same great effort for 18 more holes," said head coach Kelly Hovland.

REGIONALS INFO

Athens is one of six Regionals sites around the country. All six regional sites have 12 teams and six individuals competing. The top five teams (30 teams total) and the low individual not on an advancing team (six individuals total) from each regional site, 156 student-athletes total, will advance to play in the national championships to be played May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Terps are in NCAA Regionals as a team for the first time under Kelly Hovland's tenure as head coach, alongside assistant coach Amanda Hollandsworth in her first full season and sixth all-time as a program. Patricie Mackova is competing in the regional event for the second season in a row after earning an individual bid to the Albuquerque Regional just a year ago, where she finished in a tie for 25th at the University of New Mexico Championship Course.
