COLLEGE PARK, MDÂ -Â Maryland takes on Navy on Thursday, August 24. The meeting will serve as the home opener for the Terps, as they will play their first game of the 2023 season at Ludwig Field. The match will air on B1G+.
Note, the game will start at 5:45 PM, 15 minutes earlier than originally scheduled.Â
Maryland comes into the contest at 0-1-1 after a draw in its season-opener against American and a loss at Florida on Sunday.
The Terrapins played their second-straight road match last Sunday to start the 2023 season, as they traveled to the Sunshine State to take on the Florida Gators. It was a defensive battle through most of the first half, until the Gators got on the scoreboard in the 41st minute. The Terps turned it on in the final 20 minutes of the second half, constantly in the Gators defensive half. The Terps had their big chance in the 88th minute, when
Lauren Wrigley put a shot on goal that was blocked by a defender and fell to the feet of
Lisa McIntyre. McIntyre put a shot on goal that was parried by the goalkeeper back to McIntyre, who put her next effort wide.

Series History - Navy
- These two teams met last season, playing to a 1-1 draw. Kam Fisher tied the game up for the Terps in the 15th minute. Maryland out shot Navy 18-11 in the matchup.Â
- The last Maryland win in the series came in 2017, with Maryland taking a 3-0 win. It was a tight match throughout the first 60 minutes, until Chelsea Jackson and Jlon Flippens scored in the 61st and 63rd minutes of the match. The Terps added another goal in the 85th minute thanks to Jarena Harmon to give them the 3-0 score line in the victory.
Maryland and Navy met last season and played to to 1-1 draw in Annapolis.

No Place Like Home
- In home openers, the Terps are 20-3-5 at Ludwig Field all-time. The Terrapins are currently unbeaten in home openers in seven, with the last loss coming against TCU in 2016 (2-1).
- Last year, Maryland tied 1-1 in its home opener against #17 Georgetown thanks to a late goal by Alina Stahl. Maryland also defeated Michigan 1-0 at home in 2022, which was the first time it had beat Michigan in program history.
- Since the Terrapins moved into Ludwig Field ahead of the 1995 season, they have a record of 158-92-40.
- In addition to its great home record, the fan support in Ludwig has also been phenomenal. During the 2022 season Maryland had great fan support as they had one of the highest average attendance numbers in the Big Ten.Â
- Throughout its nine home games during the 2022 season, Maryland had the sixth-highest average attendance in the Big Ten, recording nearly 900 fans per game.
Maryland's last home win against Navy came in 2017, when they defeated the Midshipmen 3-0.
Mikayla Dayes assisted the first goal of the match that broke the deadlock in the 61st minute.
Youth Movement
- The Terps brought in the No. 11 Freshmen class in the nation and the top-ranked class in the Big Ten, and they have made their marks early in their careers.
- Seven freshmen made their Maryland debuts in the season's first week, including four that made their starting 11 debuts. Kennedy Bell and Madison Krakower started both games last week for the Terrapins, with Peyton Bernard and Hannah Schapiro making their first career starts against Florida.
- In addition, Lisa McIntyre and Isabel DiPrima have been key have been key members off the bench for the attack with both getting shots on goal in Maryland's match against Florida.
- Defender Kennedy Bell has gone the full 90 minutes in both of Maryland's first two matches of the season. Bell was 34th-ranked recruit in the nation by TopDrawer Soccer in the 2023 class.

Beardsley Rock Solid in Goal
- Beardsley has been strong in goal for the Terps through the first week of the season Beardsley made three saves in the season opening match against American and four saves against Florida.
- Beardsley has only allowed one goal in the season's first week, giving her a .500 GAA and a save percentage of .875. Beardsley's seven saves so far this season rank as the second-most in the Big Ten.Â
- For her efforts, Beardsley was named the first Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week for the 2023-24 athletic year.

Getting Shots on Frame
- The Terrapins have been one of the best teams in the nation so far this season at getting shots on goal. The Terps have gotten seven of their ten shots on target, leading to them being one of the most accurate teams in the country through the season's first week. The Terrapins have a shot accuracy of .700, which ranks in the top-20 nationally and best in the Big Ten.

Lisa McIntyre has been a key member to the attack for Maryland through its first two games, with two shots through her first two games.
Terps Back Line Show Effectiveness
- The Terps back line was phenomenal in the first two matches of the season. The defense is full of newcomers to College Park, but that hasn't stopped them from developing chemistry in the back. The defense picked up a clean sheet in their first game of the season, and then held strong after a late goal in the first half against Florida to keep Maryland in the match.
- Center backs Katie Coyle and Eden White have brought seasoned Division 1 experience to the Maryland defense. Both players have been on the field for all of the action in the opening week, with Coyle playing the full 90' in both games and White going 161 minutes through two games.
- Left back Caroline Koutsos is new to the position, but has fit well in the defense. Koutsos comes from UMBC, where she starred in the midfield for the Retrievers through four seasons. Like the aforementioned center backs, Koutsos was a mainstay in defense for the Terrapins in week one of the season, putting in 179 minutes.Â
- Freshman Kennedy Bell has also made her presence felt in the Terps defense. Bell went the entire way in both matches against American and Florida
Caroline Koutsos, a transfer from UMBC, has fit in well in defense despite being a midfielder most of her collegiate career. Koutsos moved to the position after transferring to Maryland and has picked it up well. Koutsos is one of four newcomers to Maryland's defense that have been crucial to its start to the 2023 season.
